1998 Dodge Ram Pickup 5.2

Summary:

Beautiful piece of junk

Faults:

Beautiful truck. It is Dodge's Intense Blue. 1500 standard cab, long wheel base.

Truck runs really well. Has good power.

That is all that can be said good about it.

From the first day I bought it (32,000 miles on it), it has smelled like a giant match.

The drives side brake smelled like it was going to burst into flames.

The gear shift knob pulled off in my hand 3 days after I bought it.

I took it to the dealer for those things. They did manage to fix the shifter knob.

The brake has finally stopped stinking, but it could be because it is winter.

I took it in for the poor gas mileage it gets, 10 miles in town (no idea about hwy, can't afford to drive it very far). Dealer found that the intake manifold had a leak. That was repaired. I got the truck back and now it smelled rich instead of sulfur.

Took it on a hwy. trip to go buy a shell for it. Did 400 miles round trip (coming back with the shell) and I got 14 miles.

Took it back to the dealer. They can find nothing wrong with it, maybe it will work its self out!!

Guess it is live with it or get rid of it.

The truck now only has 37,000.

I will never ever own another Dodge.

Is the brake dragging? The one that smells? I get approximately 18mpg with my 5.9L 4x4. If your brake is dragging, that increased resistance would be like pulling a trailer which would kill your gas mileage. The brakes on the Ram are small for the truck size, you caliper may be shot.

1998 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 turbo diesel

Summary:

1998 a Lemon of a Ram from Dave!

Faults:

Sometimes the oil pressure gage stuck.

Sometimes no tail lights.

Sometimes no dash lights.

Sometimes, not all the time, blew dash and tail lights when hauling.

Gas gage sometimes would bounce up and down every thirty seconds and ding, or wouldn't register at all.

Sometimes no trailer breaks when hauling and no brake lights.

3 factory recall notices (reprogram engine speed and diesel fuel tube and reprogram P.C.M.).

5 trips to the dealership to figure out the noise from the driver side window was because the door had been dropped at the factory, this qualified the vehicle for the Lemon Law.

Gas gage replaced three times.

Driver side mirror flew off on freeway.

4x4 went out.

General Comments:

The Five Star Dealership (Top Idaho Dealership) that sold the Lemon would not stand behind Chrysler's promise to replace the vehicle. Another dealership gave me a brand new truck that is great. I would not recommend a 98 to anyone.

1998 Dodge Ram Pickup XLT V8

Summary:

An attractive, expensive mistake

Faults:

Rear end went out at 56,000 miles.

Transfer case went out at 60,000 miles.

Leather seats worn out at 60,000 miles.

Gas mileage is awful.

General Comments:

I like this truck, lots of power, fun to drive, the design is the best ever, sharp looking truck. However, I will not get very many more miles out of this expensive mistake. I purchased vehicle used for $20,000, and have put another $5000.00 into it to keep it on the road. I would definitely buy an extended warranty if purchasing one used!!!

In Europe these trucks are unsustainable. I can't imagine any sane person driving a pickup truck with a 6 litre engine in Europe. I do wonder how the US is going to cope as fuel costs go up. Anything that does less than 40mpg in the UK is regarded as a gas guzzler, what does this truck do? 15mpg? Just amazing the US economy can take it...

1998 Dodge Ram Pickup 4 X 4 supercab Sport 360 5.9 Gas

Summary:

Great truck, good power and very comfortable

Faults:

Goodyear tires are cheaply built (50000km). Replaced twice (80000km) then switched to different brand.

Replaced drivers side tie rod, ball joints both sides.

Front disc's and pads were replaced at 70000km.

Paint is bubbling on front and rear bumper.

Valve noise from under the hood; brought to dealer twice and still hasn't been fixed, but motor always ran strong.

Passenger side rear speaker went out at 20000km.

General Comments:

Power is awsome from 360. Never been beat by Ford or 6L Chevy pickups.

Inside of truck is still like new.

4 X 4 has never let me down. Extreme use; towing boat, 3 snowmobiles, and frozen lake use.

Very comfortable. I'm 6'4 and I have lots of headroom, back is also very roomy.
