1987 Dodge Ramcharger 318

Summary:

Saved me over $200,000 in car payments

Faults:

Plenty of minor things. The drive train is original except for some performance parts.

General Comments:

Best vehicle ever. This thing was super-dependable for 29 years. This year I am going to redo the carburetor and ignition. Took it to Maaco and the rust is gone. Everyone used to ask me: "When are you going to get rid of the RamCharger?" Meanwhile it's seen their expensive new sets of wheels come and go. This thing has saved me a small fortune. And the real problem is, the new vehicles are $40,000 and are not as roomy inside. For half that amount I could dump a 440 in this thing and pay for the gas for another 20 years. If you search this entire site, you will not find another vehicle with higher owner satisfaction.

1987 Dodge Ramcharger 150 LE 5.2 gasoline

Faults:

The starter trashed up on purchasing this truck.

Torque converter bolts were loose.

Plugs, wires, rotor and cap were burnt.

Electrical system was shot.

Rear axle seals, couplings and axle shafts were trashed.

General Comments:

Before the 800$, this is what happened.

Before I had the money to fix the truck, I could not let it sit in the driveway, so I hit the local mud hole and still pulled out three Chevys.

And now around here, the new word for tank is RAMCHARGER.

1987 Dodge Ramcharger Royale LE 5.9L

Summary:

The Dodge Ramcharger is really the Command Vehicle for a M-1A2 Abrams Tank

Faults:

The A/C generally had a hard time with the Georgia heat, never could cool truck very-well, even after the 1997 conversion.

The engine and transmission were replaced with Jasper products in 1999 at 93K miles. All is still going well.

In 2004 replaced radiator, carburetor, intake, and added dual exhaust with headers at 138K miles. Runs very clean now.

Steering gear box and new leaf springs replaced in 2007, steering is still not like new, but the ride is tight again.

The cloth interior stayed tough the last 20 years and the power window and locks are at the threshold of repair.

General Comments:

The Dodge Ramcharger is really the Command Vehicle for a M-1A2 Abrams Tank, it may not be made of rolled homogeneous steel, but it is still "B-A-Double-D" Dawg Badd.

The roomy interior allows for poor decision making skills when four-wheeling.

Over the years, the exterior has held up to the harsh environments of Florida, Hawaii, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Kansas, and North Carolina, this is the most dependable truck ever, and is the best work-horse in every aspect since the horse and buggy. From swamps to volcanoes - it wanted more.

The Ramcharger drive-train is a "wish" for all - as the industry standard for today. In twenty-two years it has never sat down on the job, I have never had to walk anywhere. The 5.9L engine will go through some gas but the number of passengers, towing weight, or pulling out stumps per mile bumps it to an "average" for economical performance. Although, gaining in years, the Dodge Ramcharger is an All-Time All-Star on any lineup. Now, that I am in my 50's I realize more than ever you "must be young" to undergo such off-road experiences while remaining sane and being able to laugh about it while "Cranking-up the RPM's" for the next off-road course.

The best all around vehicle I ever owned

Faults:

Fan clutch replaced.

Thermostat replaced.

Smog pump replaced.

General Comments:

I put 4000,000 miles on my 1984 Ram Charger before it was stolen.

My only complaint is that the cruise control is difficult to accelerate with the button on the control lever.

1987 Dodge Ramcharger LE 5.2 318

Summary:

Outlasts imports and Fords hands down

Faults:

First 4 years, 2 alternators; one had no output, and the second one (under parts warranty), bad bearing.

Headliner and steering shaft (replaced with borgeson u-joint shaft).

Two months ago the front end was out of alignment, so I knew it needed one ball joint. I thought I would have the shop replace all ball joints and u-joints. I had one cracked rotor, so I replaced both along with brakes, calipers, bearings, and brake hoses.

Oh yeah and the original starter last year.

Belts, hoses, and all fluids.

General Comments:

I am the third owner. The the first owner was the service writer for a Dodge dealer and kept good records. The second owner was a friend of my dads.

The repairs are very minor because they are general maintenance every car needs, and that's not bad for a 20 year old truck. All my Dodges have been very reliable, and I use them hard.

The only complaint is it's a little underpowered. It runs great, is very reliable, and you can beat on it like a Dodge, but it moves like a Ford, meaning it doesn't move fast enough. What it means is when I get behind Fords they are going 5-10 miles below the posted speed limit, but my Dodges always pass them.
