1996 Dodge Stratus LE 2.4 litre

Summary:

A waste of money

Faults:

-Car won't hold wheel alignment

- Starts only when it wants to, constant stalling, I've had it to a dodge dealership and they can't find why its doing it, the car will pull no codes on the computer at dealership when this problem happens.

- Tachometer went crazy and spun around the opposite direction, and is now stuck, and won't work.

- Ball joint's need replacing lots.

- While driving car will shut down and loose power. (extremely DANGEROUS)

- Final coment's I will never buy a dodge again.

- Nobody seems to know how to fix the dam thing.

- I have never been so furious with a vehicle as I am with the stratus that I own.

- complete waste of money $$$$$$$$$$$

1996 Dodge Stratus 2.4

Summary:

A great car at a great price!

Faults:

The head gasket began leaking after the standard warranty expired. Luckily, in Canada, there is a semi-secret warranty on head gaskets so it only cost me $50 for the repair.

At times the air conditioning has a fishy smell, but usually goes away after a few minutes.

I wish there was a little more sound-proofing to reduce the road noise.

General Comments:

I have been very impressed by the performance and great economy with the 2.4 litre engine.

I am over 6'2" and find the front and back seats to be comfortable.

I just replaced the original tires at 115,000 kilometers, not for lack of tread, but to improve the ride.

1996 Dodge Stratus ES 2.0

Summary:

A demolition derby's dream!!!

Faults:

Ball joints, both upper and lower.

Lower control arm broke.

Head gasket blew.

Wheel bearings replaced MANY times.

Doesn't hold an alignment.

Car runs hot continuously.

Oxygen sensor replaced two times.

Heater control switch only works on high.

Lights in dash at heater control panel go out frequently.

Thermostat replaced 3 times.

Trunk lock hasn't worked since first time car was washed.

Driver side lock doesn't work.

Driver side window, non-electric, off the track.

Trunk shock broke.

Seat belts tighten up to choking stance for no reason.

Paint peeling off hood from engine heat... or could it be poor primer?

General Comments:

Once again, Dodge has made a pill. This car, in performance, or lack of, is identical to the Daytona that I had. Seems all troubles I had with the first car are coming back to haunt me tenfold in this one.

This car handles well when it is in top working condition, but it seems one problem is taken care of and immediately another one springs up!!

1996 Dodge Stratus ES 2.4

Summary:

A P.O.S run it into a tree if you have a chance

Faults:

The 1996 dodge stratus is a waste of money transmission went out at 82000 to top it off the ac went out around the same time to. Before I owned it I read that the previous owner had the head gasket went out around 40000. Now after having the transmission rebuilt it is still not shifting right I went over a bump and it won't get out of first gear.

General Comments:

I will never waste my money on a dodge or any cheap American throw away car that is built to last for only two years. I am going to buy a good foreign car that will actually run to the ground..

1996 Dodge Stratus ES

Summary:

A total piece of junk that will put you in debt

Faults:

The wipers worked whenever THEY wanted to.

My head gasket blew at 45,000 (i found this out from dodge) I replaced again at 106,000.

Front Drivers seat broke, my back killed me all the time.

There was a bad seal on the windshield, whenever it rained the drivers side carpet would be soaked a from water and it would smell like mildew for days after.

The computer Chip malfactured.

The interior light by the air/heat setting went out.

Check engine light would come on, but didn't come on if there was no oil in it, neither did the oil light.

Rear door gaskets were messed up from lack of use.

Rack and pinion needed to be done.

The trans went one day on me all of a sudden when it was fine.

Rear main seal was replaced.

Oxygen Sensor.

Lower ball joints were replaced.

Engine mount was cracked and needed to be replaced.

The brakes never worked well no matter how good of a pad I bought.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

General Comments:

I bought the car after the transmission on my saturn went. To this day I regret it. I put so much money into that car. It looked really nice, or at least okay for an 18 year old with no money really to buy something nice. The car was actually scary to drive because it had horrible handling. The brakes never felt like they gripped, it was aweful. My stepfather put hours and hours of work into that car for me, he replaced all the seals in the transmission and it went very shortly after. I did buy this car with a lot of miles, but it seemed like everything that we replaced, was already replaced by previous owners. I would NEVER EVER buy another dodge. I've heard so many things about there cars, I heard that Jeeps are very bad to so stay away. I wish they would actually take all this into consideration. But they don't car they built crap. And they should definately recall the 2.4 liter engines on them. Save tons of money don't, but one.

The Chrysler company, deals in selling cheap, but reliable cars. They can't take responsibility for people who are not mechanically inclined. I bet at least 90% of people who complain about the reliability of their cars have never even lifted the hood. When asked 50% of people don't even know what kind of car they have, but they can sure tell you what kind of stereo system they have. I do the minimum maintenance on my 18 year old Ford Tempo, aside from the bad rep - my car is the most reliable car I have ever had including my brand new Ford Focus (in '04) and Dodge Neon (in '05). Because of its cheap maintenance and reliability I opted to keep this car over any of the others. I paid $600 for it with only 69K original miles.

People that judge manufacturers by the cars after 10-15yrs, multiple owners, and umpteen-hundred thousand miles on them really tick me off.

It seems like the mechanic should be in the hot seat not the car itself. Why do these cars go for 250k miles if they are so fragile? With an air compressor an an impact wrench I can replace a set of brake pads in a matter of 10 min. If the rear drums aren't reassembled properly, they will have problems in the very near future. Were they ever bled? Air in the lines will result in crappy stopping power.
