1995 Ford Aerostar XLT 4.0

Summary:

I will keep this van till the day it hit the scrap yard

Faults:

I purchased this van for $1500.00 and it was in great condition. The first repair came when the thermostat went bad at 68000 miles.

I replaced the drive belts at 70000 miles.

The rack and pinion needed to be replaced at 72000 miles.

I recently had the vehicle painted.

The front spring coils had to replaced due to sagging.

General Comments:

After all the major repairs and paint job I still came out on top. Total money invested $3500 including the vehicle.

The van runs great and awesome on long trips.

1995 Ford Aerostar XLT 6 Litre 4WD

Summary:

What looks good today may not look so good tomorrow

Faults:

The back brakes were completely cracked. In replacing them, we found out that the emergency break cable was supposed to self-adjust to the new breaks, but didn't.

We had to replace the power steering hose as it was leaking.

The sliding door does not work well at all, frequently needing adjustments.

Finally, the engine gave out on us. The Ford dealership told us these engines were "virtually (indestructable}". Ours was the exception to the rule. After only owning it for a year, we are shelling out big dollars for a new engine.

General Comments:

I really like my Aerostar despite the major difficulties we have had. It runs well (when it runs), it is very roomy, and the seats are quite comfortable.

It is a nice looking vehicle. There is very little rust on the body, which is surprising considering the snowy, salty climate in which I live.

Recently I received a recall notice from Ford and the local dealership fixed the problem efficiently. The cable that holds the spare tire under the vehicle was recalled, which was no surprise to me as I found my doughnut and cable were missing. The Ford dealership replaced my doughnut with a full-size tire at no charge.

Just curious... Is the Aerostar available in both AWD and/or 4WD? Is the AWD "full-time" and does it affect gas mileage?

Also, is the Aerostar only available with automatic transmission?

I am very interested in a 4WD manual transmission Aerostar. Do they even make it?

Since writing the above review, I have had many more problems with my 1995 Ford Aerostar (extended, 4WD).

I have had to replace the engine at approximately 175 000 kilometers. Today my guess would be that the transmission failed. I paid 7000 dollars for this vehicle 3 years ago and have since put about 8000 dollars into it. Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. The cost of repairs is astronomical. The parts are quite expensive and the engine layout makes access to its components very difficult. In the future I will document all of the repairs that I have done, but right now my book with repairs is in the glove compartment and the vehicle is at the garage, yet again.

Run, run as fast as you can.

The vehicle is automatic 4WD or so it says. The gas mileage is atrocious. I get about 400 kilometers on a tank. Right now it costs me 55 dollars to fill up. Highway mileage is somewhat better. I understand that the earlier models were available with manual transmissions, but were discontinued.

1995 Ford Aerostar XLT 4.0

Summary:

A reliable, affordable mini-van

Faults:

Frequently needs brake pads, but other than that, nothing.

General Comments:

Purchased new and driven 100,000 miles with virtually no repairs beyond routine maintenance. Has been a highway cruiser - 22 mpg at 80mph.

As well an around town grocery getter, kid hauler, maybe 18 mpg around town.

Compared to the Econoline we had before, the Aerostar is built better and very reliable.
