1986 Ford Bronco II 2.9

Summary:

I think it is like a full size go kart that can go anywhere

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the Bronco. I purchased it used with noisy lifters and they are still noisy.. No worse.

General Comments:

Get a limited slip rear end and a set of 31 inch BF Goodrich Radial Mud Terrain tires and these things will go anywhere. I have driven around huge stuck four wheelers and embarrassed them badly. (sometimes I am in two wheel drive)

I think these units are possibly the sleeper vehicles. Better than people think.

1986 Ford Bronco II

Summary:

Very reliable and low maintenance

Faults:

My transfer case blew at 160,000.

Hoses were leaking at 160,000.

Alternator blew at 165,000.

After replacing transfer case, alternator and hoses it has run great. The blue paint was chipping on the roof, but after a paint job that was taken care of as well.

General Comments:

I have been in two small collisions and one serious accident. The car has had minimal body damage and I have walked away from all accidents. I live in Alaska and this car starts at -40. A great and reliable car.

1986 Ford Bronco II XLT 2.9 Fuel Injected

Summary:

An affordable off-road SUV

Faults:

Had to replace the transmission.

Had to replace the engine.

Replaced the fuel pump.

Had to replace the radiator.

Heater coil died.

Had to replace the starter.

Tie rod assembly rusted out.

Cross-member under the transmission rusted out.

General Comments:

Rides like an off-road vehicle.

Performs well off road.

Affordable, but not reliable until everything has been replaced.

If you plan to own this car, be knowledgeable in how to fix it; you will need to be able to--unless you plan on spending major dollars to have someone else play with all of the problems that will arise.

Any vehicle that you don't do regular maintenance on will be a burden. So change your oil, and grease your axle's.

1986 Ford Bronco II Proto 2.9 V6

Summary:

I will keep my B-II forever, and when I go, I am going to be buried in it... Hey, people have!

Faults:

I have only had one real problem with the Bronco II that left me high and dry. The computer module went out the day after I purchased it. I was not amused, I bought it from a dealership and I made some serious noise until they offered to replace it at their expense. (no warranty was offered at the time of sale)

Since then all the modifications made to it have been to trick it out or upgrade stock items.

Bigger radiator installed helps the overheating problem, replaced drive line and C-V joints with larger drive line and U-joints, killer stereo, bass boost, speakers, amp, equalizer make my rig rock.

4" lift kit, 33 x 12.50's give me some clearance, beefier transmission and rear end and yes the stock 2.9 got good mileage and did not leak a drop of oil... The new 302 with headers and dual exhaust make my B-II breathe fire with the "big boys"

I have changed the paint like some people change socks... It is currently a beautiful Metal Flake Denim blue with Opalescent Fuchsia and Royal blue pin-striping. I sure like the effect under night lighting in town.

My sons bought a neon blue under carriage light kit for my birthday and several other neon accessories to top the "look" off. Nothing, but compliments from people anywhere I go. I have the added bonus of the workout my arms get from the constant polishing I do to it.

Mechanically I have never had a vehicle so dependable and honest. Easy to start, everytime. The biggest safety red flag I have for this rig is the high possibility of tip-over. B-II's are NOT stable for fast turns, slick roads or side-hilling. Be aware save a life! Use your head off-roading, if you have a lick of sense you'll be just fine in a B-II.

General Comments:

I have driven my B-II for the last 13 YEARS! I drive it almost daily. I do have other vehicles to rack up the miles on. Still I save my "fun" trips for my B-II. It looks good, can turn 360* in a single lane road and has a pretty respectable Low-range 4 wheeling ability.

Gas consumption isn't unreasonable and you can take the whole family grocery shopping with room to bring them all home!

Congratulations on the B2 experience. I have a 1986 4x4 Ranger that runs just as great.
