1989 Ford Escort LX 1.9L

Summary:

Great reliable starter car

Faults:

Total break replacement at 150,000 miles.

CV Boot replacement at 150,000 miles.

Alternator bracket loose at 160,000 miles.

CV Boot replacement at 180,000 miles.

Battery cables corroded at 185,000 miles.

Retractable seat belt motor out at 190,000 miles (driver side only).

Left turn signal light out before I owned it.

Water pump replaced 120,000 miles (prior ownership).

General Comments:

This was my first car. It has carried me reliably for 6 years. I was very impressed with how well it handled in snow and ice... much better than my husband's Saturn. Considering the age and number of miles on this car, I am very happy with the relatively minimal repairs over the past 6 years.

With careful driving, I got 40 mpg. The gas mileage alone made it worth keeping.

I am a relatively small person and found the seats to be perfectly suited to me... which means it's probably too small to comfortably fit medium to tall people.

All in all, it was a very reliable car. Repairs were cheap, fast, and easy. And there was very little electrical equipment to break. The only think I really missed was air conditioning.

1989 Ford Escort GT 1.9

Summary:

Great car for anyone, any age, any sex. Always surprises waiting for you in a Ford Escort GT

Faults:

Clutch went out at 98,000 miles.

Starter switch fried at 105,000 miles.

Replaced windshield at 106,000 miles.

Brake pads replaced at 106,000 miles.

New paint job at 99,000 miles.

New tires at 105,000 miles.

New exhaust at 97,000 miles.

Lowering kit at 100,000.

General Comments:

This car is unbelievably fast and doesn't wait around for others.

Very reliable and clean running if taken care of right.

Interior could use some changes, but everything worked very well.

Not owning the car for very long, I enjoyed it more than any other car I've ever owned.

I drove the car for a little over 7 months and put a lot of money into improving it, although never fails that something happens after you do it; I totaled the car on February 2, 2005.

1989 Ford Escort Pony 1.9

Summary:

Good engined car with a crappy body

Faults:

Most recently the body has rusted so badly that the rear left shock has went up through the wheel well making it rub when I go around left curves or corners.

The ball joints are weak.

The drive-side seatbelt doesn't work anymore.

The speedometer doesn't work.

The odometer doesn't work.

Left headlight is dimmer than the right.

Hatch doesn't lock anymore and the hatch doesn't stay up by itself.

Floor boards are rusted through.

Heat doesn't work anymore.

General Comments:

This car is sort of underpowered, but on the highway its still speedy. The manual transmission is definitely better for acceleration in this car.

Engine is in perfect running order even after all these miles. It doesn't use oil or leak anything and is still running strong.

I'm very pleased with the performance of this engine and transmission, but disappointed with the state of the body.

If I could find another Escort body and put this engine and tranny in it, it would be a good way to keep driving this car.

I have a cute little escort pony, but the engine is shot. Looks like I am on the other side of this seeing as how the body and interior are in great condition for being an 89 model, but it is just sitting in my driveway.

1989 Ford Escort LX

Summary:

Cute car that tries its hardest to make you happy

Faults:

Transmission rebuilt at 65,000 miles.

Fuel Injector replaced at 70,000 miles.

Timing belt at 50,000 miles.

Alternator replaced at 85,000 miles (a $600 fix)

General Comments:

I worried a lot with this car about whether or not it would make it from point A to Point B because it ran so badly.

Shakes a lot when passing 40mph, but stops after 65mph.

I had a lot of small problems with this car after the transmission was rebuilt, but nothing big.

A couple months before I junked it, it started stalling constantly at every stop light and stop sign. Would stall even more frequently in the rain.

Besides all this, I love that car more than anything and wish I could have afforded to keep it because it was still running when I junked it and it would probably still be running now. It always tried it's hardest. I'll miss her : (
