1993 Ford Escort LX Wagon 1.9

Summary:

Cheap transportation for the hard working man

Faults:

Brake master cylinder went bad at 148,000 miles. Also had a few rusted brake lines that busted.

General Comments:

Has plenty of room to haul anything, from family to bikes, etc.

Engine never leaked oil.

Was a great car for me.

1993 Ford Escort GT 1.8 twin cam

Summary:

Will outrun Civics at a small price tag

Faults:

The timing belt was bad when I bought the car. That was a $300 fix.

Passenger side window was broken as well.

Emergency brake doesn't hold well at all.

General Comments:

I picked up the car for $300 from the original owner. I considered this a steal since the car only had 87,000 miles on it and had all the service records.

My favorite thing about this car is the look it puts on all the ricers as your blowing by them at the stop lights.

The car I owned before this, a 1991 escort LX, was no competition for this.

You can definitely feel the difference right off the bat.

1993 Ford Escort GT 1.8

Summary:

I loved my Escort GT

Faults:

Timing belt went at 93000 miles. Drivers window assembly broke at 100000+ never fixed. Seat belts worn and frayed badly and relay broke in the closed door position - manually put on belt thereafter. Brakes replaced 4 times. Had 4 new batteries installed. Tires cost a bundle to replace- did so three times. Emergency brake caused rear brakes to wear while under warranty - dealer fix for free! Front tie rods replaced twice. It now has a unidentified stalling problem and time for it to retire.

General Comments:

I Love this car - the gas mileage was great - the clutch and exhaust are still original and in good shape. Very comfy and loads of room with fold down rear seats for everything. All in all we traveled across country with this car many times and never left us stranded. I wish Ford still made this car as I would have bought another one. I wouldn't even trade this one in for my new car - they only wanted to give me $300.00. It will be donated to charity and have one last good use for me. I will miss my little Escort GT.

Well, I love escorts too... and although you probably don't have it anymore, I may know what was causing the stalling. in my escort lx (granted different motor), but the pcv valve or something like that needed to be replaced (cost a grand total of a couple bucks). but good luck with whichever new car you get, I'm trying to find a gt right now myself.

1993 Ford Escort LX

Summary:

A highly underrated car!

Faults:

The air conditioning works best at high speeds.

I have had a few minor problems (headlight burnt out, tire blew etc.) though all have been very inexpensive to fix.

When the rear light went out, the cruise stopped working. Good news: When I fixed the light the cruise worked again!

General Comments:

Good pick-up!

This car has been performed amazingly.

I just drove the car all the way from Waterloo, Iowa, through Yellowstone, and eventually to Seattle. That's over 2000 miles! Now I drive it 50 miles to work and back round trip, haven't had a problem yet!

1993 Ford Escort LX Wagon 1.9L SOHC

Summary:

A great little wagon

Faults:

The dreaded former owner put "stop-leak" in the radiator, which caused multiple cooling problems over the next few years. The cooling problems were compounded by another problem that occurred during this time -- the partial failure of the coolant temperature sending unit for the dash temperature gauge. We now know the gauge consistently registered low. As the temperature gauge was not registering correctly, we had no idea that we were running the engine hot until my wife cracked the head coming back from Dallas one hot summer afternoon in 2000. I have no real estimate how many miles we put on the car while it was overheating. The car had roughly 165,000 miles on it at the time the head cracked and the problems were discovered.

The aforementioned cooling problems also caused 4 A/C compressor failures in the first 3 years of ownership. All cooling related issues have been solved now that the problem was discovered.

General Comments:

The car has actually been quite reliable, considering the treatment of the previous owner. The interior is still flawless and the paint takes a shine well. The Ford/Mazda teamwork on this car has created an impressive car; one worth fixing and continuing to drive.

Performance and reliability have been good. With the exception of the blown head, the car has never left us on the side of the road. The little wagon has averaged 32-33 MPG, with mileage on trips up to 39 MPG.

The car has been modified (Escort GT suspension and other tweaks) and handles well. Other modifications, including a Jasper re-manufactured engine, should result in increased fuel economy.
