1994 Ford Explorer xlt 4.0

Summary:

I am really honored to have had this car in my ownership. I will be sad to leave it. It's family!

Faults:

After about the first 3 weeks of purchase we got a big snow storm excited, I put it in 4x4 backed out of the drive way and got stuck. I don't know what the problem is, it says it is in 4x4 but it isn't, I push the button to shut it off, that don't work. It needs all new ball joints and a wheel bearing, leaf spring shackles rusted out and one is currently resting upon the frame.

General Comments:

When I first got it, everything worked great!

It runs great, and has been very fast for me!

1994 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 4.0 V6

Summary:

This car has been nothing but a rusted out lemon!!

Faults:

Clutch at 112K - expected

Fuel pump at 115K

Clutch at 118K - not expected (possible dealer installation at fault)

Water pump at 120K

Rear spring hangers at 134K

At 138K, I believe my clutch is going out again. Found that I am using oil, which seems to be leaking from point that the transmission meets the engine.

Severe rocker panel rust on the driver's side to the point that there is almost no panel anymore.

General Comments:

Had a 91 Explorer Sport (auto) previously with minimal problems through 170K and loved it.

Bought this one based on that experience. Has been at least $500 in repairs every year that I have had it, with the next round possibly being up to triple that amount.

1994 Ford Explorer XLT 4X4 4.0

Summary:

Not good

Faults:

New transmission at 143000.

Still needs ball bearings.

The truck randomly decides to stall even though the transmission is brand new.

The mechanic who replaced the transmission also said it still needs another major part.

General Comments:

Very, very unhappy with it.

Another classic review. You buy a truck with 140,000 miles on it and no idea if the previous owner ever changed the tranny fluid and it goes (what a shock). What was the other MAJOR part needed? Did you expect this 13 year old truck to run like new?

And stalling is referred to as something the engine does, not the tranny. an engine stalls. a tranny doesn't.

If the previous owner had never changed the tranny fluid, the evidence of that would have been very obvious to a mechanic or anyone who checked the fluid. It has been well documented that '94 Explorers have a high rate of transmission problems, so odds are it is not just a blunder of the previous owner. Honestly needing a new tranny at only 143000 miles is something most people would consider a flaw, and the reason they read reviews in the first place. Also the transmission is one of the many things that could cause an engine to stall.

1994 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V6

Summary:

From 0 - 350,000km without any failures

Faults:

.Transmission wouldn't up-shift after 250,00km. replaced with rebuilt unit, no problems after that.

.Rear wiper never worked since day one, dealer could not repair.

.engine always had ticking noise up hills or under heavy load.

General Comments:

Very reliable vehicle. This truck went for 11 years all the way to 350,000km without failure. The transmission was the only non-original part on the vehicle.

We never did a tune up and it still ran strong and always sounded awesome.

Decent power around town, but not adequate for freeway passing. This vehicle is too heavy and the automatic transmission robs it of power. The engine also had no top end so it wouldn't pull hard at high rpm. Great low end torque.

Not fuel efficient, but it was reliable. It never once left us stranded and had no rust. All power accessories, a/c and cruise control worked fine till the end.

Good off road capability, but it has poor ground clearance.

Comfortable truck, feels safe and smooth on the road, just keep that engine tuned and change the transmission fluid.

I highly recommend a manual transmission and transfer case. Also buy a 2 wheel drive if you are not serious about off road. Buying a 2 door sport model may also help on performance and fuel mileage, they also look better.
