1988 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 HO

Summary:

Thrill ride!

Faults:

My alternator went out at 180,000 miles.

My driver side seat broke at 170,000 miles (racing)

The battery completely died at 220,000 (due to cold weather)

I bent the rear pinion at 225,000 miles (due to racing again)

The light switch went out at 200,000 miles (due to high powered bulbs)

I repainted my car at 230,000 miles for a change.

General Comments:

I love this car and could not give it up for anything.

As you can tell the only problems I have with this car is from racing or from old age.

I think its really neat that I could bend a ring and pinion with a almost stock engine by racing it everyday.

1988 Ford Mustang LX 2.3L Automatic

Summary:

An OK car

Faults:

Bad power steering pump.

Oil leaks from the cylinders.

Rear right speaker channel fried.

Fan sensor malfunctioned, had to rewire it so it was always on.

Broken Fuel Gauge.

Broken A/C.

Accelerator would sometimes stick when floored, had to replace.

Trunk will not stay up.

Muffler rusted out, replaced.

Timing belt jumped, had to replace.

General Comments:

Engine accelerates very slow, espacially with the automatic.

Still pretty fast for a 4 cylinder.

Really good gas mileage.

Comfortable seats.

Needs a new quart of oil every 3 months.

Engine starts right up in any weather.

I do not know the miles because when I acquired the car the engine was rebuilt and someone messed with the odometer.

Overall, the car is fairly decent, although some annoying think goes wrong from time to time.

1988 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 HO

Summary:

Throw me the keys to that horse!

Faults:

- Electrical gauges on the dash.

- Mufflers rusted from sitting through Canadian winters in a heated garage.

- Front disks warped from heating up too much (too fast maybe).

- Stock stereo speaker blew after the first month. It's very hard to put speakers in the doors. Get someone with the right tools, trust me!

- Rear hatch doesn't stay up.

General Comments:

Let me say this to all the people out there looking to buy a new Mustang - don't. Outside of the minor problems that I have had with mine, I have talked to other people that have bought new - they all ask me if I want to trade STRAIGHT ACROSS!

I love my car, I will never get rid of my 5.0, because of the way it makes me feel when I stomp on the gas man! It looks brand new and drives like new; better gas economy than the new ones too!

1988 Ford Mustang LX 2.3

Summary:

2.3L Five speed is fun and economical

Faults:

Air conditioning needs re-charge every 2 years, but no other service.

Has needed coolant added every 2 weeks since day 1, but has no visible leak.

Has used 1 quart oil every 1500 miles since new, but lately has needed oil every 1000 miles.

It needed clutch replaced once.

Some electrical wiring has shorted, but I was able to repair it myself.

Two in-tank fuel pumps have failed, but never left me on the side of the road.

General Comments:

Cheap to operate: 35+ miles per gallon on the highway, 30 miles per gallon combined, and 25 in-town with air conditioning on.

With 5 speed manual, car accelerates OK. I would not buy a 2.3L mustang with automatic transmission, due to low acceleration.

Car has never left me stranded and has never been in the shop. I was able to repair everything myself.

Non-Ford parts, like the water pump are cheap.

1988 Ford Mustang LX 2.3 Cylinder

Summary:

Gets you where you need to go

Faults:

When pressed, sometimes the accelerator pedal did not function (since ownership).

Back trunk hydarulic broken (since ownership).

Dome lights stopped going on (at 32,000 miles).

Air Conditioning broke (at 32,000 miles).

'Left your lights on' Chime doesn't work (at 32,000 miles).

Rear left speaker blown (at 38,000 miles).

Vanity Mirror lights would not go off, had to be disconnected (at 38,000 miles).

Blown Fuse for horn and cigarette lighter. New fuses blew instantly when put it (since ownership).

Radio/Cassette player did not work and was replaced (since ownership).

Driver Side Power Lock could lock, put not unlock (since ownership).

Passenger seatbelt does not tighten when brakes are applied (at 40,000 miles).

Transmission shifts very slowly (semi-truck-like) up steeper hills.

Left power window jammed at 42,000 miles.

General Comments:

The car gets you where you need to go. Never had a mechanical problem with any vital parts of the car (e.g. engine, alternator, brakes, etc.).

Good gas mileage.

However, almost all of my bonus features broke, either before I got the car, or under my ownership (A/C, power windows, power locks, chimes, dome lights, etc). They individually cost too much to replace such minor details.

Terrible car for the winter. Easily loses traction due to its rear wheel drive. Easily gets stuck in snow. Fun and easy to do donuts in.

Accelerator sometimes stuck. Can be very scary when you hit the gas and nothing happens. Brakes never had a problem.

Small and cramped interior. Not very comfortable, not much headroom. No cup holders.

Paint chipped easily, rusted easily. However, this was because it was not garaged and was old.

Good review. I have the exact same car, and almost everything you listed has happened to me, except my accelerator would get stuck floored sometimes, creating an even scarier situation.

Although I've never owned a mustang, it sounds like you two need a 1988 Chevrolet Camaro. Not many in good shape but if you take care of them, they'll take care of you.
