Cracked the block once, and replaced with a Mazda motor.

CV boots went out, but joints were fine.

Water pump went out.

Coil went out.

Speedometer was squealing, and is now off by 5 mph.

Radiator fan motor stopped working.

Windshield has been replaced and now leaks.

Needs body work.

General Comments:

This car handles great going around curves and hills. it's a great first car and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. even though almost everything on it has broke down, it's always bounced back with a little work.

1989 Ford Probe GL 2.2L

Summary:

Oh my oh my

Faults:

Had to replace Control arm and ball joint on both sides.

Had to replace heater motor.

Had to replace front tire rod.

A/C doesn't work.

General Comments:

All and all this car is a great for car for someone who can't afford to buy a brand new car right off the lot.

I love the way it handles and the sporty feeling it has to it.

It has had its problems, but it was a good first car and it got me from point a to b many times, sometimes with the help of a tow truck pulling.

Its always an adventure when you ride in my car you never know what will happen next.

1989 Ford Probe GL 2.2L Inline Four Cylinder

Summary:

Good car for first time drivers begging for modification

Faults:

So far, the only major thing that has failed on the car mechanically since I got it was the alternator, which went out a few months after I got the car.

The only other things of consequence that have happened are two of the cooling system hoses blowing out, probably due to the age of the rubber, but these are not major problems to repair.

General Comments:

This is the second vehicle I have owned; the previous car that I had, a 1983 Honda Accord, dropped it's transmission on me which necessitated the purchase of a new vehicle.

For a four cylinder car, I have to admit that this car has respectable acceleration and cornering capabilities.

It's fuel economy at present leaves much to be desired in comparison to my Honda, but then again the engine in the Probe by comparison is also a half liter bigger than my old Accord.

The only things that I am a bit frustrated with about the car though are the lack of parts for it, either OEM or aftermarket, which makes customization or even simple repair difficult at best.

1989 Ford Probe GL 2.2L I-4

Summary:

Awesome economically and gives you this sense of freedom when driving down the road

Faults:

When the car was sold to me for $500 it needed a new Air Duct which the previous owner mistook for the Transmission, which was fine, but the mechanics she took it too blindly missed and tinkered with the transmission and made it worse if anything because now it has a tendency to shift slightly rough, but nothing I can't take care of (bought a used Air Duct from a junk yard that didn't have any cracks in it. Right front strut needs replaced, need new windshield, driver seatbelt copper recoiling band snapped, need to find an adapter to recharge the air conditioner. had to replace right front headlight so I decided to replace them both for the heck of it. And then just an alternator that was dieing on my way home, but didn't leave me stranded. Parked it and turned off the engine and it recharged enough to get me home. Although my interior lights and headlights were dimming. Also regular maintenance at Grease Monkey.

General Comments:

I for one am having difficulty deciding whether to by a newer car or keep this one because the 2-door hatchback coop style has served me well. If anything I'd like to at least get into a newer probe last made in 1997. But it's a very nice car for $500 bucks and the gas mileage is awesome and I can load it with almost anything with the handy split folding back seats. May not be a turbo, but I really don't need to be racing anyway. But I'm leaning toward keeping this car and just bringing out the best in this car.

I have owned my 1989 Ford Probe GL since 2001 and have loved every day with it. I have, however, experienced many problems with the alternator. Having replaced it in upwards of about 15 times (sometimes 2 - 3 times per year), it has caused me some grief. I now have to retire my car, as it has rusted quite badly.

But while I owned it, I truly did enjoy it.
