1993 Ford Probe SE 2.0 DOHC

Faults:

The tires don't grip very well when it's moist outside.

At first there were no problems with it, but because of how I drive it parts wear out quickly.

It eats through breaks every 6000 miles.

At 123,000 miles my right front brake cylinder went out, along with inner tie rod ends.

At 127,000 miles my altinator went out.

At 130,000 miles it developed a hairline fracture in the water pump.

At 142,000 miles my automatic transmission went out. Then I replaced the transmission. To weeks later at 144,000 miles I blew that transmission up.

Currently I am converting it by myself to a 5 speed manual transmission.

General Comments:

My Ford Probe is not a Ford though, it was one of the few manufactured by Mazda.

It is a very fast car.

Its automatic transmission does a second gear scratch when it shifts.

Very to work on.

Best car I've ever owened.

Stock it does a 15 second quarter mile.

Very Strong Engine.

Outstading performance for a base model car.

15 second 1/4 mile with 115 HP and an automatic?? Boy you have a warped sense of either time or distance. I had a '93 Probe SE with a 5-speed and NO WAY was it that fast. Get a grip!

That's a pretty good trick getting a 15.0 second time in the quarter mile, with 4 cylinder automatic, when the GT V-6 does it in 15.8 seconds with a 5 speed. You need a new stopwatch!!

No, No... he means 0 to 60 in 15 seconds.

1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5L

Summary:

Gorgeous car that has had many problems

Faults:

I have only had this car for 5 months and since that time much has gone wrong with it. I bought the car with a bad transmission which costed $1700 to fix.

The exhaust then needed to be replaced. ($250)

I put a new paint job on it because it was badly faded.

A month after I had it the distributor then went. ($300)

Almost exactly two months after the distributor was replaced that one broke, along with the brain which will cost me another $500. (My mechanic told me this will be a reoccurring problem)

I also right before I put the car on the road had $1500 in service and repairs done at Ford.

I also had problems with the door panels staying in place and the rear hatch staying open, as many others noticed.

General Comments:

I love this car. It's appearance makes it a real head turner.

The car also handles superbly and loves to take the corners.

It is very comfortable and the interior is styled nicely.

Since I was told however that the distributor will be a reoccurring problem and the large amount of money I have already invested I am forced to sell it. : (

I owned the car for 7 years and spent around $6000 in total on repairs so far. It now has 350,000 km. I replaced the water pump, the distributor (the dist. twice within 2 years). The front suspension either breaks or needs aligning yearly (some say it's due to the heavy Mazda engine). The sunroof leaks. The alternator belt squeaks - had to replace it twice. The power steering bearing had to be replaced. The car now needs a new manual transmission - slips out of 3rd and 5th gears. I changed the front brakes twice and the rears once.

The car is now at 350,000km. I used it to toe my boat for the past 3 years. I never owned another car so I can't really give you a biased opinion about the Probe.

What I can say though is that it is a nice ride, was rated the sexiest car of the year in 1997...It has a powerful and reliable 2.5L V6 Mazda engine... and the car definitely needs constant TLC (i.e. repairs)...You gotta love it to buy it and to keep it.
