1993 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L V6

Summary:

Average vehicle, but I have high standards

Faults:

Radiator repair (clogged) two times -- 70,000mi and 130,000 miles

Replaced clutch --120,000 miles

Replaced battery -- 100,000 miles

Replaced battery cables -- 70,000 miles

Replaced starter and solenoid -- 100,000 miles

Repair oil pan leak -- 100,000

Leaks oil still, but doesn't burn any.

General Comments:

Overall, this has been a pretty good truck. However, I've been frustrated at some of the problems it has had. For instance $200 at the dealership for battery cables. An intermittent cruise control is also a bummer.

The engine has a lot of torque, but it's slow and piggy at higher speeds. The transmission synchros have been fried since I bought it. And like a previous review, the windshield tends to get hit by rocks.

However, the seats are very comfy for a guy my size (5' 9"). I'd rather take this truck on a long drive than our 1998 Honda Accord.

I get about 18 miles to the gallon in the city. Driving it over 65 mph on the highway makes the mileage plummet as well.

Taking it in tomorrow for servicing. Seems there's coolant leaking around the water pump housing.

Still a good truck if you do a lot of home improvement projects and gardening.

1993 Ford Ranger XT 2WD 2.3L

Summary:

Great little truck I love it

Faults:

The only thing I could tell was done since new on this truck before I got it was brakes and clutch I got the truck at 207.000km as is and it sat for 3 years before I bought it for $1000 then decided to put it on the road, because of age and lack of maintenance as well as it sitting I had to replace the following items.

Ball joints. they where not greased regularly or ever.

Throw out bearing.

Shackles/hangers, from rust.

All 4 shocks replaced.

Brake lines, flexlines, pads, shoes.

Blower fan resister

General bodywork andtouch ups for it's age.

General Comments:

Being a Canadian vehicle and not rust checked a day in it's life, and having a few young owners before in college it needed a lot of work. never touched the transmission, engine, or rear end though, other than tune ups. after fixing everything that was neglected by previous owners, I haven't had to replace or fix anything since I got it on the road about 5 months ago other than a rusty rad cap, I have put about 10,000km of country back roads and city driving on it hasn't given me one problem. it drives like new and is great in the snow, since it has limited slip. I would recommend this truck to anyone, it's fun to drive and dependable. it's very quiet and smooth. I plan on buying another one if this ever dies which the way it's going won't be any time soon.

I bought my first Ranger in 1992 and have had 4. All of them have been absolutely flawless. You might want to read Consumer Report's October issue in which they feature vehicles that have made over 200,000 miles with no problems. The highest mileage vehicle in the article is a Ford Ranger that has just under HALF A MILLION MILES!!! Our family has two companies that use Rangers and 300,000 miles is common. They are great trucks. Under light commercial use they easily last as long as the bullet proof F-150 big trucks.

1993 Ford Ranger LX 4 cylinder

Summary:

Good truck for the money

Faults:

Gasoline gauge - A monster to fix. It took me two days to empty the gas in the tank, bring down the gas tank, fix the gas sensor unit and bring the tank back up again.

Gasoline filler neck - This part has two parts. An inner hose and an external hose. For some reason it was leaking big time gas on floor. In order to fix, the gas tank had to be brought down. Felt like my life was over. Lot's of headache. Just left it like that and gave up. Use to take 20 minutes at the gas pump to fill half a tank.

General Comments:

Overall performance was good. Tough truck. Good price.

Just inspect the gauges on the dash to make sure they all work, and make sure the gas tank or filler neck is not leaking.
