1996 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 LT

Summary:

Good working truck for good price

Faults:

Paint cracked on the hood, roof, and fenders. Ford would not pay for it.

Front suspension creaks over bumps and when I stop.

General Comments:

Comfortable, powerful and reliable.

However the paint problem cost was high.

1996 Ford Ranger Base 4 cylinder

Summary:

Fun loving dream mobile

Faults:

Nothing, this truck is awesome. Although it could use a different transmission, it is still a bulldog. I like to take this thing and play in mud and gravel every time I get a chance to. It gets 32 miles per gallon on country roads.

Oh yeah, the seat is beginning to rip up.

General Comments:

I recommend this truck for teenagers who are into their 2nd or 3rd vehicle - it handles good, will slow them down (did me), and will save you and them money. In parking lots I can do donuts like mad while pealing out in drive or reverse. Believe me, it is cool.

1996 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L V6

Summary:

Great engine, poor transmission

Faults:

Auto transmission was serviced 3 times during the warranty period. The first problem occurred with < 1000 miles on the car! Tranny slips, misses shift, etc.

Steering linkage is junk. Wheel alignment can't be performed due to slop in the tie rods/linkage.

Lots of creeking noises from the bed and the front end.

Windshield wipers will operate on their own at any given time! Washer fluid will spray too! Freaky stuff...

General Comments:

The engine has performed flawlessly which is more than I can say for the transmission. I change the oil/oil filter every 3-5k. I am the original owner and have not been abusive in the least (when it comes to driving). I was extremely disappointed the first time I had to take my car in for tranny work. I figured it was a fluke and everything will be fine down the road.

Not! 15,000 miles later the tranny is slipping again. I take it in again (under warranty) and think: No problem... the dealer will fix it right this time and I'll be set for the next 100k.

Wrong! Right at the end of the warranty period (35,000 miles), the tranny starts slipping yet again.. This time I called the Ford corporation to demand a "new" tranny. To make a long story short, Ford said they would "fix it right" this time. The valve body was replaced this time. I since gone 50,000 miles and still get an occasional slip or unwarranted shift.

The whole experience dealing with the Ford dealership and corporation was agonizing. They had little remorse and would offer no kind of extended warranty. I am not comfortable driving the truck... I keep waiting for the transmission to crap out... The next time will be the last.

I will not buy a Ford again. I have talked with other Ford owners who have shared the same or similar stories about their transmissions. Take a look at some old Taurus reviews!

I bought a new '96 4x4 Ranger and really liked it for the first two years. Then my dealer had to replace the plug wires (no big deal). Because the bad wire caused the engine to miss, the computer lit up the check engine light, which had to be reset by the dealer. Since then, my transmission slips between 2nd and 3rd gear. After many trips to the dealer where they changed computers, tore the transmission out, etc. they finally just gave up. I was told it was their fault because of the way they reset my computer, and they did give me an extended warranty, however, I am now about to go back to have my second universal joint replaced, which I feel is being caused by my slipping tranny, and my warranty is about to run out. I need a truck for now, but this is my last Ford.

1996 Ford Ranger STX 4.0L V6

Faults:

Front suspension creaks like a 17th century wooden sailing ship.

Windshield cracks when the AC is turned to full power.

Rear tilt out windows do not operate without some manipulation.

Variable speed windshield wipers are unreliable.

General Comments:

Dealership service is a nightmare. Everytime I bought my vehicle in they broke something else.

Well the power steering is sounding loud and the fluid is grainy and foamy brown. It's a 1996. I must admit it just smogged OK... But I'm going to sell it ASAP.

It's a good looking truck but it's going away ASAP...
