1990 Ford Taurus LX 3.8L

Summary:

A few quirks, but overall a great car

Faults:

The calipers are shot and need to be replaced.

A/C doesn't work.

Cruise control doesn't work.

Automatic headlight shutoff doesn't work.

General Comments:

This car has a bad paint job, rusty wheels, but will smoke most cars off the line due to the engine being planed down due to a head gasket leak.

The interior is in great condition with no tears in the seats and the seats are very comfortable.

Radio and speakers still have lots of power.

This car will smoke a brand new mustang with the same 3.8L engine.

Overall this car looks like it should be in a junkyard, but runs great and has tons of power.

1990 Ford Taurus GL 3.0L

Summary:

Not a mistake I'd make again

Faults:

Alternator died soon after I bought it.

Distributer died 6 months later.

Numerous coolant hoses have cracked/broken while driving.

Old wiring would melt/fuse together, shorting things.

Lost transmission pan gasket seal at 180000.

General Comments:

The previous owner had the engine rebuilt at 150000 miles.

Reliability, especially with this much mileage on it was a huge issue, put nearly twice what I'd payed for it into repairs and maintenance, something major would go wrong every 2-3 months.

Handling was horrible, the automatic transmission was sloppy, would skip gear occasionally even after having it tuned up.

It is reasonably comfortable and the interior was in good condition.

1990 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 Liter

Summary:

A Turd ball car that nobody will steal

Faults:

The struts went out at 151000 miles.

The engine has leaked oil as long as I have known the car.

The radio display went out shortly after I bought it.

The speed sensor went out same time as the struts.

The rear sway bar broke when the struts did.

The CV joints went out about the time the struts were clanking.

The paint is about gone.

The rust holes have taken over the body leaving it looking like a fine swiss cheese.

The headlight lenses faded to a dull yellow leaving minimal light output.

The Headlamps point to the sky as if beckoning God to put her out of her misery.

The transmission slips all over the place except in park with the engine off.

The Air conditioning went out and the parts are resting silently in a city dump somewhere.

The power steering system groans except when its going straight.

The car pulls to the right so bad it would do circles if I let go of the steering wheel.

The rear defroster doesn't work, but I can't see out of the back window anyway because the rear view mirror fell off.

One of the back doors is loose and clunks over bumps.

The speakers are blown.

The car only starts if you pull the tilt steering wheel all the way down and keep pressure on it while you turn the key.

The car smokes after you park it. This caused several people to tell me that my car is on fire.

General Comments:

The power seat works well.

The speedometer works quite well also.

It as a very effective theft deterrent system. It is ugly and falling apart. The smoking helps too.

The woodgrain on the dash resembles that of a 1970's mobile home.

OK, you bought a car with 150k and you are complaining about it? When buying a car of that age and mileage, it is very important to know the complete history of the car. It sounds like the car was a beater from the day you purchased it. Next time, take some more time to look and maybe spend a little more for a quality car.

1990 Ford Taurus LX 3.0 V6

Summary:

A-OK and Highly Recommended

Faults:

Power steering/rack and pinion all went out at once... cost me $1100 to fix, thanks to a BAD mechanic.

Rear bumper detached on drivers side and flapped in the wind... just screwed back on with a drywall screw.

Other random upkeep... considerably little considering I drove it up to 220,000 miles before selling it.

A/C stopped working LONG before I had it, no cruise or horn.

General Comments:

Great car. It was METICULOUSLY maintained by my dad before it was handed down to me for my first car. Still drove very strong and shifted pretty nicely with 220,000 miles on the ORIGINAL 3 litre motor and original transmission.

It was definitley a good starter car, big enough to feel safe in, low insurance, and decent mileage. The only cars it could beat were Honda CRX's, but hey, what can I say, it's a Taurus.
