1991 Ford Taurus GL 3.0

Summary:

A reliable, spacious sedan with a few minor problems

Faults:

Front struts rattle over any bump.

The paint is faded on the hood and roof, I have heard this is a common problem with Ford's in the late 80's and early 90's.

Front brake rotors are warped and have slight pulsation when the brakes are applied.

Transmission feels weird when I drive in overdrive under 55 m.p.h. therefore I just drive in regular drive until I get over 55 m.p.h.

Brake line in the rear on the driver's side rusted out and broke in a parking lot leaving me stranded.

Ford speakers are weak. Rear speakers have blown out twice and fronts were replaced and still sound bad.

I wish the cruise control still worked.

General Comments:

This car has moderate acceleration and drives nice for a $400 car.

I like the power windows, locks and seat, and how they all still work.

The car gets decent gas mileage and never fails to start for me in any weather.

The back seat is like a sofa.

It always gets me to work or the store when I need it.

1991 Ford Taurus GL 3.8 V8

Summary:

Poor choice for a used vehicle

Faults:

The Ford Taurus GL transmission is a piece of junk. We had to negotiate with the dealership after we bought the vehicle to pay 75 % of the repair for the transmission. The dealership knew it was going out. The transmission started acting up seriously within 2,000 miles of driving off the lot. I would be sitting at an inclined intersection with the car in drive and the transmission would shift into neutral all on it's own. There are websites on the world wide web regarding how unsafe the transmission is and people being left in similar precarious situations. Ford should have recalled the transmission as an unsafe design. I wouldn't take a Ford Taurus if they gave it to me with an extended warranty free.

The interior started loosening up at about the same time. By loosening up, I mean upholstery screws started coming out of the electric seat control for the driver seat.

General Comments:

People be aware. Ford knows this is an unsafe vehicle and refuses to acknowledge they have an unsafe product on the streets. How many 1991 Ford Taurus GL do you see on the road now?

This goes to you and everyone else with bad complaints on Ford Taurus's. Every used vehicle with high mileage is going to have problems. There is not any vehicle's mad, even brand new ones, that has no problems at all. However normal maintenance well decrease wear and tear on a vehicle, such as not abusing it, making sure all screws, nuts and bolts are tight once in a while, because all screws will loosen after so many years. As far as transmissions, if you have transmission flushes done every two years, and do regular service intervals, you are very likely going to have a vehicle without too many problems. Cars are like kids, you have to maintain them, you just cannot put gas in a car and drive it and expect it to have no problems, no more than you can put clothing and food to a child and expect them to never need anything else.

1991 Ford Taurus LX 3.8 V6

Summary:

Good family car, but needs too much repair if older

Faults:

Motor mounts had to be replaced.

Front driver side caliper bolt failed causing caliper, and rotor to be replaced.

Rear ABS locked up back breaks.

A/C seals and compressor leaking.

General Comments:

The car is great when everything works correctly. But most of the time there are problems. It seems as though every time I take it in for a minor repair it ends up costing me a fortune.

The car itself is very comfortable and roomy. It also drives easily and handles well for a larger vehicle. It also has great gas mileage for highway driving.
