1997 Geo Metro

Summary:

A reliable, efficient good car that I would purchase again.

Faults:

Heater not currently working.

At times it doesn't start.

General Comments:

This has been a very good car. Except for the recent problems starting (it ultimately does) and heater problem the car has been very reliable and efficient. I am very happy with it and don't consider the 2 problems a serious issue.

1997 Geo Metro LSi 1.3

Summary:

A fun car, but not a serious one

Faults:

The lighter does not work.

The rear defrost does not work.

The air conditioner does not work.

The check engine light came on today.

General Comments:

I have enjoyed my little car. The gas mileage has been great until recently. I had the air conditioner fixed once and it lasted throughout the summer.

It is an uncomfortable car to ride in. My husband said he feels as if he is in a fishbowl. It is not one of the safest cars available.

1997 Geo Metro LSi 1.3

Summary:

A very good value used car

Faults:

The previous owner replaced the transmission and with a rebuilt one, and did standard maintenance up to 216810 miles.

The muffler rusted through at 221678 miles, costing 193.93 to replace.

The original battery wore out at 221678mi, costing $41.77 to replace.

The rebuilt transmission differential seal leaked at 222131 miles, costing $187 to fix.

General Comments:

The car was previously owned by an inter-city courier, and I got a pretty good deal on it. My Toyota Tercel had just been totaled, and I was looking for a replacement car to cover a few months of finishing school and earning a real income. I figured that the $1600 price would be well worth it if it just lasted a couple months. It has. And I expect that it will last many more months.

The battery and muffler seemed like standard replacement items, given that I was buying a high-mileage used car.

The transmission seal was worrying, since I'm not sure how much I trust the rebuilt transmission, but I was glad that it needed only a new seal and a fill-up of fluid. If the transmission goes, I think I'll get another rebuilt one.

I can't find a good repair manual, since the Chilton's and Haynes only seem to cover up to 1994.

Excluding my purchase costs, I've spent $679.51 on gas and maintenance for 6145 miles, or $0.11/mile over the last 6 months, which has exceeded my expectations.

I've been trusting this car more and more as I've driven it.

1997 Geo Metro LXI

Summary:

A price bargain

Faults:

I have had no problems with this this car. No problems at all.

General Comments:

I have had no problems with this car. I starts first time, every time. It has enough get up and go when I need it. The only money I have had to put in it is for oil changes and tires.

The gas mileage is great.

It handled better then expected in a snow storm.

Hello Steve, We just purchased a 97 GEO METRO, about a month ago, we are really pleased with it except for one thing. When it rain's it won't start, as soon as it stops raining our GEO METRO starts up. Have you any clue why this happens. Any advice would greatly help. Thanks Rose.

P.S. lucky it has rained only twice since we had it.

1997 Geo Metro LSi 1.3

Summary:

Rod bearing costs more than the car

Faults:

Battery just died without warning at 117,900 miles. (don't know how many batteries it had before I bought it)

Right after the battery died one of the rod bearings went out at 118,000 miles. Getting it fixed will cost me more than I paid for the car!

The steering wheel shakes violently above 65mph. Neither and alignment or steering inspection have fixed it.

General Comments:

Nice little car to put around in, but really scary to drive on the freeway.

It's so light weight that driving over 75 it can start to become hard to control the car.
