1991 Geo Prizm 16v EFI

Summary:

A nice reliable car for your money

Faults:

Nothing major has gone wrong with it, except I bought it with a rusty muffler and popped speakers.

General Comments:

This has been good to me, it's quick, handles like a dream, and can keep up with many newer cars.

However the air conditioning robs way too much power on the automatic.

1991 Geo Prizm Hatchback 1.6L

Summary:

A solid little car with a great engine

Faults:

The headliner was hanging down when I got it.

The tailgate was leaking quite badly when I got it. I've got it down to a slow drip now.

The clutch slips and goes into 2nd gear very hard on cold days.

The door handles are very cheap plastic. The previous owner had to replace them before I picked it up.

The red paint oxidizes continuously.

The A/C needed a recharge.

General Comments:

This car has a great Toyota engine. Plenty of pep and still not burning or leaking any oil at 122,000. I get about 36mpg.

Very comfortable seats.

The dome light is very dim.

The car's exterior appears to not have been very well cared for, but still there is next to no rust, even underneath.

1991 Geo Prizm 1.6

Runs just like a Toyota Corolla, but cheaper

Faults:

The starter slowly went between 67,000 and 70,000 miles, it took a few months before it got too bad.

The driver window does not closely completely.

The dealership painted over the rust, which has now come through the paint.

The radiator either came with a leak, or acquired one.

The thermostat was replaced around 65,000 miles.

The car tends to run too hot.

At 75,000 the brakes need to be replaced.

General Comments:

The gas mileage is great, I get between 30-42 miles per gallon.

The air is ice cold.

It doesn't have many problems for the year.

The car handles snow and ice with ease.

1991 Geo Prizm LSi 1.8

Summary:

Geo goes FOREVER..

Faults:

1) Head-liner has fallen.

2) CV Joints had to be replaced.

3) Tie-rod ends had to be replaced.

4) Alternator every 2 years since 1995.

General Comments:

Excellent service from this car, I could not ask anything more from it. I had a Metro previous to this and kept it for 2 years before I got the Prizm, it was also a very reliable car.

After getting behind the wheel of the Geo Prizm, I knew that was the car for me, everything was perfect, the ride, power, view.

I can say that I expected a lot more trouble from a car with this many miles on it, but nothing so far, it cranks the first time, always has and hopefully always will.

I am considering trading it in for a new 2002 Geo "Chevy" Prizm next year or maybe just keeping it, I don't know yet. I still have half a year to go to make up my mind.

My family had a '93 Geo Prizm when I was a kid. It became sort of my car when I was in high school. Sold the car for parts a few years ago, but our Prizm days weren't through. In model year '02 my dad found out that was the last year for the Prizm and we got a new one. Dad got a stick version 3 years later ('02 and same color as the other), but that was totaled in '09. The '02 we got new, which is an automatic, became my mom's car when Dad got the stick. My mom's car, even with 16 years and close to 130,000 miles, is still purring and just as reliable as ever. The only problems are rear end rust (the car was rust proofed, but the fenders still rusted). Ugh, salt! The front fenders have been replaced due to deer dents, but they were rusting anyway. My dad named all these cars, Peppermint Patti ('93), Miss Bluebell (auto '02) and Madame Blueberry (stick '02). Bluebell had to go to the garage this year, her inspection ran out and we were told she needed a new catalytic converter. The garage also replaced the resonator pipe because that could fail, even during work. A lot of money to spend on a car that age, but we're sappy on her. Maybe naming cars leads to sentiment? We were sappy on our little Patti when she was old, but the poor thing was too rusty on the bottom.

I used to drive a 1990 Geo Prizm LSi when I was in high school. I often felt embarrassed as many of the students had much "better" cars. But when I look back now, I realize that it was the ideal first car and it simply worked so well. So reliable and easy to drive, and it could fit in any parking space.
