2003 GMC Envoy 4x4 V 8

Summary:

Good drive and dependable

Faults:

My Envoy will not start sometimes. It just goes click. Sometimes if I move the shift up and down, it will start right up.

Sometimes I can't even move the shift at all, and it just clicks. All lights go on and everything is working, for example the radio etc.

I have to keep moving the key till finally there is another long click and it starts right up.

Sometimes it will start and stall right away, and then not start, just click. I then try turning till there is another click, and then it starts again and everything is fine.

Has anyone had this problem, and what needs to be fixed?

General Comments:

I love the car. It has had most of the same problems as I have read, but all and all, I love it and would like to keep it another three to four years.

Summary:

The warrenty on the 2003 Envoy does not cover fan noise

Faults:

Engine sounds like it is going to blow up. Fan clutch or something has been wrong since six months after purchase. Dealer says fan works and repair is not covered by the extended warranty that I purchased. It has been roaring for about 72,000 miles. Am I the only one that likes a quiet ride?

General Comments:

Everything else seems great about the 2003 Envoy, except the engine noise.

It sounds as if you have a VERY unconcerned dealer.

We have a 2003 Envoy and the only problem we've had (in 65,000+ miles) is a glitch in the A/C ducting (blew only on the floor). We have a great dealer who immediately repaired it at no charge even though our warranty had expired.

Any time someone has a problem and the dealer refuses to fix it, go to the corporate offices or file a claim with the Better Business Bureau or state Attorney General's office.

Most people don't really press these issues as they should. NEVER allow a dealer to refuse to repair ANY legitimate problem, and make them justify NOT covering any item under an extended warranty IN WRITING. The law sets very strict requirements that require manufacturers to fix such issues while the car is under warranty.

Your problem is with the electronic clutch fan. I just replaced mine. It is quiet now. It sounded like an air plane taking off before. You should take it to another shop, and tell them it is the clutch fan, and if you have a bumper to bumper warranty, they should fix it, but if it is power train warranty, it won't. Buy your clutch fan at Advanced Auto Parts or Auto Zone; they offer a life time warranty. The price of the clutch fan is around $250.00, and you're probably looking at another $250.00 in labor, unless you know a mechanic. Your gas mileage will improve.

I have an 2003 GMC Envoy 4.2. There will not be a code if you try to put the vehicle on a computer to find out what's wrong. This is a very common problem with the 4.2. Your dealership should know this, or they just don't want to fix it.

Summary:

Too bad right now it's turning me right off GMs

Faults:

Noises in front end that were changed, strut, ball joints, tie rod ends, fan clutch, rear linkages, transmission overhaul, these were all in the last 6 months.

I still have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. There is no specific time when this happens, but when the vehicle is started and is put into gear and the gas pedal is pushed down, the engine revs up for 5-10 seconds, then slowly the vehicle starts to pick up speed, then everything is fine until the next random time it picks to do this again.

I have had this to the dealer 4 or 5 times, and of course they can't get it to do it, and their computer does not pick up any faults. Anyone had this problem??

The last thing is on a cold start it sounds like a diesel, then smoothes out 10 minutes into the ride and sounds quiet.

I bought this SUV for its style, HP, comfort and size.
