2002 GMC Sierra SLT 6.0

Summary:

A little on the high-end price, but a good bang for the buck!

Faults:

Front diff output shaft seal replaced twice. Had the fender flares replaced since the paint was scratched.

Power window switch stops working at random times. Power window switch when pressed occasionally will change the power lumbar support (surprising!).

Rattle under truck bed when driving around 25mph. Must be the nerf bars I had put on -- before nerf bars, rattle didn't exist.

Occasional knocking sound from engine.

Tailgate straps broke over this past weekend. The dealer said they don't have the new recall replacement ones, but they will replace them with brand new faulty ones and notify me when the recall ones are in stock.

General Comments:

The leather interior is very comfortable. No problems while on a 10 hour road trip! Plenty of leg room - front and back.

Plenty of power from the 6.0 engine.

I plan on keeping the truck, even if I get a new engine (knocking).

2002 GMC Sierra Long bed , standard cab 4.3 litre V6

Summary:

A nice truck with poor reliability

Faults:

The first problem was a broken spark plug, repaired under warranty.

The second problem was a leaking manifold, repaired under warranty.

Current problems are: excessive oil consumption (1-quart per 1,000 miles), static in the radio when engine is running, and today the engine started, stopped, and refuses to start again. It will have to be towed to the dealer tomorrow.

General Comments:

This is not turning out to be a very reliable vehicle... I have less than a year left on my warranty and am afraid it will have to go soon.

2002 GMC Sierra 1500 HD 6.0

Summary:

Handsome, but problematic

Faults:

Front diff output shaft seal replaced 5 times. Heater control replaced 2 times. Steering shaft replaced 1 time. Hood rattle dealer could not find; blamed it on my remote start installation. I found hood hitting fender. Rattle under dash, dealer blamed remote starter again. I found a piece of metal that was later identified by the dealer as a shift cable retainer had fallen on top of the body control module causing rattle. Fuel pump replaced 1 time. Power window switch replaced 1 time. Rattle in driver door never been identified by dealer, I'll undoubtedly fix or find that one too. Tranny slips from drive at stop lights, "That's normal". Knocking sound from engine, "That's normal". The Detroit Press says its piston slap. GM customer service agents say gobbeldy gook, but we'll give you a new motor if you promise not to tell anyone else.

General Comments:

Styling and creature comforts are well thought out and attractive. The truck is quiet and powerful and drives very well on rough and smooth surfaces. The problem lies in the execution of quality manufacturing whether that be from them or their vendors.

As for the remote starter being the source of a rattle, I am an installer and all dealerships love it when they see one (remote starter). They seem to be the easiest thing to blame all sorts of problems on.

I still have my truck for over 6 years now with 200,000 miles on it and yet, only 1 thing broke but that was only a $100 fix.

2002 GMC Sierra SLE 4.8

Summary:

Total Junk!!!

Faults:

Steering knocks, rack and pinion was loose where it attached to the frame. Brakes went out after 2000 miles. Electrical problems inside the cab. Front tires are wearing uneven. Transmission does not go in gear right away, have to wait until it engages.

General Comments:

Don't trust the maintenance departments. All out to make a sale on fixing things you don't need. They avoid fixing things that are wrong and under warranty. They always find things wrong after the warranty expires. I traded the truck in for a Dodge 1500. Best thing I ever did.

2002 GMC Sierra LX dURMAX turbo diesel

Summary:

When GMC calls this

Faults:

Absolutely nothing! This truck just works; day in and out! I have NEVER had a truck which was as well made!

General Comments:

I have had a truck from each of the big 3 manufacturers, including a previous truck from Chevy. This truck rides like a dream, loaded or unloaded. It pulls my trailers like a locomotive, stops on a dime, and is the most comfortable of any truck I have owned.

Just wait and give it time. Once you hear the ticking under the hood be ready for a complete rebuild. It's not lifter noise, it's piston slap. GMC won't recognize it as a problem. Had mine rebuilt @ 40000 for the same problem. Not to insult you, but the GMC truck is not worth the cost of the metal in it. Neither are any of the dealers.
