1986 Honda Accord LX

Summary:

It is great!

Faults:

The alternator is finally going out. Backseat has tare in headrest. (kept out in sun) This car sat for 8 years do to sugar being poured in the gas tank. Glove box no longer functions properly. Speedometer was once broken. Fuel pump went out after sugar incident.

General Comments:

This car was purchased from parents.

It is faded because it sat for 8 years in one spot.

It gets 30 mpg.

It does not cost much to maintain.

Very reliable.

It is so nice that I'm putting in 2,000 dollars for paint, body kit, tint, etc.

It has lasted awhile and see no reason for it to stop.

Parts are easy to find so enjoy this car.

1986 Honda Accord LXI ?

I love this car and would not trade it in even for a brand new car

The carburetor went out at 120,000 miles.

The fabric on the top of the seats in the back has ripped.

The radio antennae doesn't work.

The car goes faster than you would expect a four-dour car to go.

The car is reliable and is very good on gas.

1986 Honda Accord LX 1.8

Summary:

Good Looking Pile of Junk

Faults:

Radiator

Steering Rack

CV Joints

Transmission Shudder

Overheating

Wiper Switch

Speedometer

Power Windows.

General Comments:

Hondas are often equated with perfection and quality, but they missed a step with the 1986 model. For a car with just 112,000 miles on it, there was a lot wrong with it. Not just abuse. All Power windows were out. The Transmission slams into 2nd.

The power steering felt funny. Extremely light at Parking lot speeds and heavy on the highway. The headlight switch was worn.

These are things that happen on a domestic car after 100k miles. Even my 1995 Saturn at over 100K miles seems better built than the Honda.

On the plus side the engine ran well, and had plenty of pep.

It was a good looking car with the pop up headlights. Probably drove nice when new, but fell apart at an un-Honda like 100K.

The reason your Honda did that is because it was poorly maintained. They do not do that under normal wear and tear.

Also the engine was not 1.8 liter, it was 2.0.

Yeah, with my 86 Honda accord the only major thing on it that needed to be fixed was the cv joint, power steering and a small miner fuel leak, all from normal where and tear.

I only paid $200 for it and it runs like new. Every thing works like new except the radio antenna won't go down, the driver side mirror needs replaced and the e break needs tightened up, but nothing big. I'm working on completely restoring mine.

The one you had was never properly taken care of. Remember if you take real good care of it, it will last a long time.

1986 Honda Accord DX 4 cylinder

Summary:

I would buy another '86 Accord even in 2004

Faults:

The following do not include scheduled maintenance, i.e., breaks, timing belts, shocks, etc.

I burnt out the alternator due to a weak battery.

An upper ball joint broke.

The radiator developed a leak and had to be replaced.

Finally, the cylinder-head gasket went bad, but did not blow.

General Comments:

Having purchased this car for $1,400 dollars with 204,000 miles on it, and finally having to decommission it 8 years later with 374,000 miles on it, I'd say I did exceptionally well. This was an amazingly reliable, comfortable (albeit, no air conditioning), friendly, even gracious, and enduring car.

1986 Honda Accord Custom Hybrid LX-R 2.0L Carb

Summary:

Perfect for anyone looking for comfort with a sporty feel

Faults:

CV boots wore out two months after I got the car: 168,200-ish.

The right fender light was broken when I received the car. I purchased a new one at a junkyard and it's fine now.

Two of the green lights for the fan selection indicators are out.

The passenger side front window comes loose slightly on wet days when it glides down.

The AC Condenser broke at 154,000 and I have not had it fixed yet... very interesting though how the RPMs go up when I have the fans on and push the AC button.

The clutch went out before I got the car (replaced with an exedy clutch), and recently the clutch cable needs replacing (which I will replace tomorrow).

General Comments:

I love my car. It's absolutely fantastic.

When I rebuilt the motor with port and polish, the engine was MUCH more powerful, and now easily takes a load of 8 passengers on the freeway.

I would not recommend the factory shocks if you are to lower the car. They are too soft and the ride is bouncy.

I love the car, and I will keep it even when I get a new car.

The gearbox is great. I can drive comfortably on the freeway in 4th gear up to 85MPH and it shifts better than my brother's Integra.
