1985 Honda CRX

General Comments:

I have a 85 CRX, and I absolutely love her. She has never given me problems.

I bought it for a commuter to go to university, and she has turned into one of my favourite cars. At 285,000 kms with no rebuild, she is running just as she did when I got her.

I recently repainted her maroon and put a silver bottom skirt on her. They are awesome little cars to play around with!

I love love love this car.

Too bad Honda doesn't make them anymore, cause they sure made their mark.

Mine's carbureted so the fuel consumption probably isn't as great as a fuel injected, but she still doesn't use a lot of gas!

1985 Honda CRX DX 1.5L 3BL

Summary:

Perfect for a college student on a budget.

Faults:

3rd Gear would not stay in gear when I bought it, but it came with a functioning transmission in the back. Apparently the guy before me was drag racing it.

The ignition switch was a bit worn and temperamental, but after I took the dash out and cleaned it, it worked fine. Would be an expensive fix if it were done in a shop. ~$200.

General Comments:

Quite fast for the gas mileage.

Showing a good deal of wear after 24 years, but nothing major mechanically.

Very dependable; aside from the ignition switch there's been nothing that I needed to fix. There are the usual things you'd expect after 24 years, (old battery had to be replaced, coolant, tires, some interior things) but that aside, it's a very reliable car.

Fun and versatile; it can be a little monster, or a gas sipper, depending on your mood.

Handles very well.

Couldn't resist chiming in. I love the Honda CRX. I have had two or so, and... words can scarcely express. But I did, after some infrequent starting problems, and the odd stall on of the highway, spend a hot, rainy morning (read: with doors and windows closed) at a rest stop, alone with my CRX, my Leatherman, and some paper towels and glass cleaner, disassembling cleaning and resurfacing the contacts of my ignition switch. We've done alright with that since then.

1985 Honda CRX HF 1.5 8 valves per cylinder

Summary:

I which I could buy a new one just like it

Faults:

Old, but still running at 138,000 and in a garage for over two years.

General Comments:

I do not drive it anymore, has been in the garage for over two years.

Just got a new battery in an it started right away! Not even my $$$ John Deer riding mower does that.

There is rust on the undercarriage, and the usual stuff that an old car will suffer I guess. I drove it and I was afraid a cop would stop me and slap me with a fine. Oh well, it was the first car I ever bought and paid for by myself, met and married my wife owning it and had my first child.

Now that boy 15 years of age wants the car I has forbidden me to sell it. What can I say, he's got good taste.

1985 Honda CRX HF 1.5L

Summary:

Awesome fuel economy, but still a 'real' car, with great reliability

Faults:

Car would not stay running in cold weather, even with the choke adjusted rich. Rebuilt the carburetor, and still had problems idling, because of vacuum leaks at the throttle shaft. Bought a fully rebuilt Keihin carburetor, and now the car runs great, with much better fuel economy.

Driver's seat is worn through the bolster to the metal. Plan to install a used Del Sol seat.

General Comments:

Outstanding fuel economy. 55 mpg on the highway if I keep it below 65 mph, and 45 mpg all-around average.

Even though it's slow, it's fun to drive and easy to park.

1985 Honda CRX DX D15A1 1.5 12 Valve SOHC

Summary:

I love this car

Faults:

The car doesn't run at present.

This review will focus on getting this car up and running again after an extended sitting time.

General Comments:

I bought two of these cars from a friend for two hundred dollars. This is, by far, the best two hundred dollars I have ever spent. Both cars are white. This means they're DXs (In 85, the only white model was the DX.). It's got the standard 1.5 leter D15A1 SOHC engine, and being a DX, it's got a carb. I live in the middle of the Mojove desert, so you can probably imagine the extremes in temperature. Yet, even after sitting unprotected in the sun for five years, both cares are in extremely good condition. The paint isn't faded or chipping, all (And I do mean all) of the seals are still perfect, all of the tires still hold air. One of the cars was a flash flood victim, so it's got a little rust, but not too much, and it's not even visable unless you're really trying to find it.

As said before, the engine hadn't been run in over five years. The flood had fried the ECU, and made the car inoperable. A few friends and myself pulled an ECU off of another CRX, installed it, changed the belts, put in oil and all the other vital fluids, sparked it, and she purred like a kitten.

Both cars still need a lot of work, but the fact that they're in such good shape after enduring such conditions in the middle of the desert for so long..it's a true testimate to Honda.

Burnin' Rice for Live.
