2000 Honda Odyssey LX

Faults:

Up to 100,000 miles (about one year ago), my 2000 Odyssey was great! Decided to keep it for a few more years, so I replaced the belts, brakes, tires, struts etc., all things that do wear out at around this time.

Then I noticed a leak under my car. Took it in, and the dealership told me some line needed replacing - another $250. Fixed that, and when I got home, noticed the leak was still leaking. Went back, and that's when they told me it was the main seal on the transmission - another $3,500 (and they refused to refund the $250 that they mistakenly diagnosed the first time). Couldn't afford that, so for the past year I've been adding transmission fluid on a regular basis. It took quite a while to come up with a good way to do it, but I discovered that by rolling tin foil around a pencil, I can make a nice, clean funnel that fits nicely into the little hole that the dipstick goes into.

Around that same time (one year ago), my check engine light went on. Took it to AutoZone for a diagnostic, and it showed about five things wrong. Took it into the dealership, and they showed three things wrong, including the catalytic converter. We decided to fix the two cheaper things, and let the catalytic converter go for now. They told me that if the light stayed off for three months, the catalytic converter did not need replacing. Well, the CEL stayed off for for a full year, but just came back on. The dealership was offering a free diagnostic this month, so I just went in today, and sure enough, it's the catalytic converter again. Not sure I believe them, and it will be eleven months until I need an emissions test, so I have some time. But, after reading everyone's comments, I know I do not want to spend the $1,025 to replace the catalytic converter, because there is a good chance the light will come right back on.

I'll report back when I figure out what to do. Glad this website is here - very helpful. Thanks.

DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER, BUY A HONDA ODYSSEY; NEVER, PLEASE. I am almost crazy/sick now because of this van. I have spent over $6000 to fix it just in the last two months. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT??? Please do not ever buy this van.

Buy a used one, like a 95. An old one, but a really good one.

I brought my 2000 home; the check engine light came on, dealership said it was a cat converter, but another authorized Honda service diagnosed it as a gas tank problem.

2000 Honda Odyssey EX V6

Summary:

Would buy another Odyssey, as you sit high and don't "fall in" as you would in small cars

Faults:

Left rear brake drum went out of round, and was replaced.

General Comments:

Very reliable.

Excellent seats, especially the driver's, since its height is adjustable and allows the driver to sit high.

2000 Honda Odyssey LX V6

Summary:

Fun to drive and very roomy, but definitely dogged by power sliding door and CE light design flaws

Faults:

Twice recently my 2000 Odyssey has lost all electrical power. Each time, the power doors wouldn't work, the vehicle couldn't be started, the power locks wouldn't work, no clock, no A/C, no radio, nothing.

Within 10 minutes, all electrical functions returned and the clock amazingly displayed the correct time. I only had to re-enter the security code for the radio and everything was functioning like normal.

I hesitate to think that the issue was the battery, because after the power outage, everything returns to normal, and I have driven on the same battery for months after the first occurrence, and now after the second occurrence.

I also cannot explain why the clock retained the correct time.

I don't know if or when this will occur again.

General Comments:

The minivan has great acceleration and handling.

I too have the annoying power sliding door issues (3 times) and the phantom CE light issues.
