1991 Honda Prelude Si 2.0

Summary:

A good, reliable, smooth running and thrifty bargain

Faults:

This car has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. I am 55 years old. From the day I purchased it (Sept. 1998) till today all I have done is put gas in and change the oil. The car has 177,000 miles on it now and it still runs and looks like new! Nothing has gone wrong with the car! Everything works!

The paint still looks new. People at gas stations ask me where I had the car painted. Their jaws drop when I tell them that this is the original paint. I do not have a garage, so the paint does suffer a bit in the hot sun in this part of California.

General Comments:

It gives me 30 miles/gallon, goes more then 400 miles on a tankfull on the highways; less in the city, may be 300 miles.

Everything works. Never had any problem. The first owner was a famous basketball player's wife. They kept the car garaged and well looked after. I am very lucky. Yes, I would buy a Honda again if I had money to spend on a new car. For now this 1991 beauty takes care of all my needs.

The timing belt was changed once by the previous owner. It got a major service at 150,000 miles before I bought it at 154,000. So I have done nothing to it so far. Oh yes, I replaced the battery and tires. I bought the best battery available DELCO 6 year and a set of Bridgestone Potenza tires.

I can relate. I have a 91 Prelude 2.0 SI and I purchased the car in early 1993. It is still running great. I've changed the timing belt twice, water pump, oil, and all the filters several times.

The only problems:

1. Cat converter

2. The rattling at about 4500 rpm - there are two pipes that comes down from the manifold which rattles at certain rpms.

Later..

I still have the Lude and not planning on getting rid of it anytime soon. My Lude still has that showroom look.

I am 24 and have had a Midnight Blue 1991 Honda Prelude 2.1 SR 4WS Special Edition for around six months. This has been the best car I have ever owned. I bought it for a steal while working at a Honda dealership in British Columbia.

The car was immaculate with 172,000kms and to my surprise it even had a leather interior. I have done a lot of work to the car since I have owned it and I am by no means a mechanic.

Best points of this car:

-Good horsepower (145hp stock)

-Good economy (Almost 600kms to a tank)

-Comfort (Great bucket seats, tons of support)

-Looks (Very sleek lines and trim)

-Reliability (Never had an issue)

Change the belts every 100,000k, oil change every 5000k, fuel treatments every 3000k, this car will not die on you.

1991 Honda Prelude Si 2.1

Summary:

World's most expensive turd

Faults:

You name, it broke. I owned the car for about two weeks and the master cylinder went out.. no big deal, it happens. A month later the engine blew for no reason, plenty of oil. It completely baffled the mechanics. Thought "Might as well change the clutch while motor is out" so I do. The clutch disintegrates in my trans a week later. Now the new motor burns about two quarts of oil every 300 miles. The radio stopped working, it overheats and just sucks.

General Comments:

Only buy this car if you're making a movie and are going to run it off a cliff. And if you are, call me, I have one for sale.

That sure sounds fouled up... but I would definitely not say preludes are bad... just yours. Also, if your new engine burns oil already that tells you something, either the engine was screwy or the owner is.

Your Prelude was, more than likely, abused by its previous owner. My mechanic, a Honda/Acura specialist, told me to never change gears under about 4,000 rpm; anything lower than that causes stress on such a small engine and significantly lowers its life expectancy. (This is illustrated by its lack of low-end torque.) I bought my '91 Lude SI 4WS with 150k on it from a lady who habitually drove 35 mph in 5th gear (according to her husband). It was smoking and consuming lots of oil when I bought it, and I had to replace the engine at 170k. I still have under $7,000 in it--a bargain for such a high-quality sports coupe. I plan to keep replacing the components in this car and hang on to it, as I love the way it handles in the mountainous area where I live, and the fact that its beautiful styling still looks totally modern after ten years.

Faults:

I had to replace the clutch and that wasn't cheap. Also the sensor that turns the dome light on broke.

General Comments:

I've owned many different cars and trucks. This one has not only been the best but also the most fun. The four wheel steering is the best.
