1997 Hyundai Elantra Wagon

Summary:

A dangerous car, catches fire

Faults:

The car caught fire in my driveway due to manufacturer defect and burned completely to the ground. The fire burned 3 other cars in the driveway, and nearly caught my house on fire. The neighborhood was evacuated. Hyundai refuses any acknowldgement whatsoever.

1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8

Summary:

I love it

Faults:

My Hyundai is a hell of race car. If you change oil and filters on time, everything will be o.k.

General Comments:

I was doing 125 miles per hour until the engine cut of the gasoline. Runs good and I bet many Honda Civics and Integras, and other cars. That power button on the transsmition makes the car fly. I changed the speakers and the receiver for about $700 and I love it. If the transsmition or engine brakes, I'll change for a new one. Hyundai power!

1997 Hyundai Elantra

Summary:

Better off buying a bus ticket

Faults:

I have had series of transmission problems. Overdrive decided it didn't want to work anymore either.

Paint is flaking off of front bumper.

Check engine light is always on!!!

Gas gage doesn't work.

No acceleration.

Common brands of air and oil filters do not fit properly.

Fluid doesn't come out of wipers. It's not clogged either.

Replaced door handles on inside. They broke again. I have super glue on one side and duct tape on the other side.

Alternator went after 2 months of owning it.

Poor service at the dealership.

General Comments:

The biggest problem I have had with this particular car is the transmission. I had that replaced within 6 months of buying it. After that it has continued to slip. I have taken it in several times to have this remedied. My cars newest problem is the overdrive. It bucks awfully when I put it in overdrive. So far it has only done it once without overdrive, but I cannot go above 50.

The paint has completely flaked off the front bumper. The back bumper is not looking so hot. Can you say plastic??

What is up with the check engine light?? I have given up on ever figuring that one out and have come to terms with it's omnipresence.

1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8L Dual Over Head Cam

Summary:

Overall a awesome deal

Faults:

The transmission got absolutely destroyed by me because it was my first manual transmission.

The clutch goes very fast.

General Comments:

This car has been through a lot and keeps on kicking.

This car made it to 96000 miles and only one transmission and two clutches.

I used to race the car on the street and win therefore the car performs extremely well performance wise.

The inside is big, but after a while the seats get really hard and uncomfortable.

They come with a nice speaker system that has lasted 96000 miles without blowing a speaker.

1997 Hyundai Elantra 1.8L

Summary:

Dare I say Hyundai's comparable to Toyota and Honda?

Faults:

Nothing really, since I have the extreme base model, there are relatively little that can go wrong. I wish I had air conditioning though.

General Comments:

Great value; lots of car for your money. I have this one in manual transmission and coupled with Hyundai's Beta series engines, which produces 90% of max torque below 3000 rpm, this is a very fun car to drive. It has great mileage; I average about 30 miles per gallon, and I push the car too! Handling is "iffy" at mid to high speeds and during severe turnings. The rear sway-bars are the pencil thin; why'd they even bother to put them on if performance was so nominal? Well, I like the car nonetheless; powerful, quick, reliable, efficient, and great value. Now I'm thinking about the new 2003 Tiburon in V6!!! Stick shift, of course.

1997 Hyundai Elantra

Summary:

This car is sour like a lemon!

Faults:

I had to replace my brakes twice on car.

Transmission went out at 70,000 miles.

Check engine light has become a usual thing on my car. The light never turns off.

Car really doesn't want to go. I can floor it and it still does not want to get up and go. I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and the air filter. I have even started using 93 octane gas and performed bi-weekly gas treatments. I cannot find the problem. The dealership cannot find the problem either.

My car easily dents on the side. I was told that Hyundai's have some kind of magnetic strip on the side so it attracts dents... if they makes any sense.

The wheel bearings on my car messed up at 35000 miles.

This car has some kind of emission control problem that no one can seem to fix.

General Comments:

I let all my family and friends know that if they want a quality car then don't get a Hyundai. My 1997 Hyundai Elantra has caused me nothing but trouble and heartache. Hyundai never has to worry about me buying another one of their cars again.

My '97 wagon has 225,000Kms on it, it has travelled all over canada, and spent 4 years in the most harshest of regions, Newfoundland & Labrador. What have I had to pay for beyond regular maintenance (tires, brakes, oil changes, etc.??)

- One clutch

- New set of plugs.

Here's a clue for those who complain about their cars - the old saying is an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Change your oil regularly, replace the timing belt precisely at 96,000 k's and don't drive your car like an idiot and I guarantee it will reward you with many years of service. I hope to get at least 300 - 400K out of my vehicle before I buy another, its just too bad they don't make the wagons anymore.
