1999 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0 Liter 140 Horse power

Summary:

A very good value for the money

Faults:

"Check Engine" light comes on if the gas cap is not screwed on tight enough.

My speedometer has been replaced because of the twitching.

Outside of the car gets dirty really fast. I take it to the car wash and as soon as I get home its dirty again. So I have to wash it by hand.

My spark plugs have gone bad, but the warranty covered them free of charge.

General Comments:

The car is great. despite the problems above. I love this car and I can't decide if I should buy another Elantra or a Santa Fe.

The car has really good power and moves quite well. I've driven it in the snow and all I have to say is wow. The car plows through the snow with now problem at all. We live up on a hill and the snow was at least 5 inches deep and the car crawled up with no problem.

The inside is very well laid out and roomy.

The warranty is great.

All in all I love this car!!!

1999 Hyundai Elantra GLS ?

Summary:

Disappointing

Faults:

First, it wouldn't run in the rain. No kidding. Stall out at a stop. It was the MAP sensor. This was replaced at 6 weeks.

Then, when you put the brakes on, the seat belt locks, and HARD. Was told this was normal.

Transmission delays and shifts weird. Gets hung in passing gear when the cruise control is on. Have to kick it down before the engine flies out of the hood. No problem found. Yeah...

Finally the transmission throttle position sensor was replaced at 8 months.

Did okay for 2 days, then back to the same old crap.

Now, when the car is on cruise control, or you are doing 65-70mph, the speedometer needle gets a "nervous twitch" and the car "lunges" back and forth. What the heck?

Minor annoyances are the squeaky steering wheel, and the paint wearing off of the window and door lock controls after just 2 months.

Add to that warped rotors at 15,000 miles and you've got a HyunDEAD.

General Comments:

Moral of this story: You get what you pay for. Cheap car, lots of trouble.

I've had what sounds to be the same problem with cruise control. Mainly at higher speeds, the cruise will repeatedly cycle quickly between accel and decel to maintain a set speed. In general, the problem is subtle at 65 mph, worse at 70 mph, and at 75 mph the passengers will lurch inside the car in time with these surges. The most frustrating thing is that there seems to be no pattern, in that it will work fine for a while and then suddenly begin surging. Of course it has worked fine each time I've brought it to the dealer who of course cannot find an "error" code in the computer.

1999 Hyundai Elantra 2.0

Summary:

Great warranty, however, didn't expect to have to use it this quickly

Faults:

At 33,000 miles had to have the transmission replaced. Took a week to get the car back, however, they did provide a loaner.

While the car was in the shop they said the front right wheel bearing needed to be replaced. That part took the shop 3 weeks to get it.

When I came in to have the wheel bearing replaced, they said the left front wheel needed replacement also. That took two more weeks of waiting. After this wheel bearing was replaced, had to bring the car back in for a rubbing sound. The wheel bearing needed to be adjusted.

Great warranty, I just didn't expect to have to use it this quickly. Now the car is making sounds like it is an aircraft taking off when I accelerate.

If I were you I would find another dealership to service that car. First of all the wheel bearings on the front are A hub and bearing assembly, and they can't be "adjusted".

Three weeks for a wheel bearing? I live in Nova Scotia, on the eastern coast of Canada. The dealerships here all stock such items, And we're about as far from Korea as you can get.

As for the Transmission, get used to it. The Automatics are Junk. I've got a 5 speed 2000 Elantra, 70000 miles, It's been thrashed every day since I bought it Brand New in 2000. It is the Best Car I have ever owned.

Your "Owner Experience" has been greatly hampered by The treatment you receive at the dealership.

Most Hyundai dealerships offer much better service than you describe.
