2003 Hyundai Elantra

Summary:

Junk

Faults:

The car is totalled at 79K miles. The engine block and the transmission are cracked. Forget about the 100k powertrain warranty. I bought the car used from a Hyundai dealership with 30k miles. It's an obvious lemon that Hyundai is fortunate I can't sue them for, being the 2nd owner.

In 25 years of driving the absolute worst car I've ever owned. I've never had a car totalled with less 100k miles, its unheard of in this day and age. They are the worst car I could have ever imagined. It overheated 4 times in the previous 2 years. The radiator was replaced twice, the thermostat twice. They are junk. Never will I even consider buying a Hyundai.

2003 Hyundai Elantra GT 2.0L

Summary:

If you buy one, you will regret it..

Faults:

Black paint coming off in spots. This started with-in the first 6 months.

Door seals replaced, tires yearly, brakes (front) twice a year with rotors.

Rear wheel hubs, clutch going bad at 40,000 miles (I normally get 100,000 plus on a clutch...)

Lower control arm snapped a week ago (rusted through; thank God no one was hurt).

Rear emergency brake cables, both sides, twice.

Motor is tapping now.

O2 sensors.

All this on a car I really take care of.. I maintain it by the book. Never missed an oil change by more than 100 miles. The front end gets aligned every time I get tires.

General Comments:

Do not buy this car. It is cheaply built. I've tried to talk to the Hyundai rep, but he/she never calls me back.

Customer service is that bad.

I have also had a control arm rust through on a 2003 Elantra Gt with low mileage. The repair shop was amazed, they have never seen this happen on any car before.

2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.2

Summary:

Reliable, great on gas, should recieve more credit

Faults:

I haven't had any problems with my vehicle.

General Comments:

This car is by far the best car I've bought, that was worth every penny.

I've always been hesitant with Hyundai; before I would have never bought one.

This car has never given me any problems, and is excellent on gas. The tank fills up with $35-$40.

It is also pretty fast, and picks up speed great. It drives smooth and is very comfortable.

I sell cars myself, and Elantras were our number 1 selling car on 2007. I love my Elantra, and it is really reliable.

2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS

Summary:

Cost efficient, fun to drive and packed with extras for very little money

Faults:

The only problems I have had is that there was a switch in the clutch that needed to be replaced. If I didn't put the clutch to the floor the car would not start. The Hyundai "died" one day in a parking lot, but it turns out I wasn't depressing the clutch far enough and it had a defective switch. The only other issue I have had is that they had to replace defective front brake pads very early on. They were squeaking badly and I thought it was a bit abmormal (to say the least) since it had less than 2,000 miles on it when I had them replaced. Both were covered under warranty and were fixed with ease (and free of course) at the dealership.

General Comments:

I love this car. I owned the Hyundai for about a year when my mom determined her 15 year old Volvo (with over 200k miles on it) was becoming too much repair wise. With little convincing she bought an Elantra GTS (the hatchback) that is a year older than mine. She absolutely loves it. I will only drive five speeds (yes I'm an odd one! :) ) and it shifts great. The only issue I have had is it is occasionally difficult to get into reverse. Other than that the transmission is very reliable and easy to shift. I am very glad that I chose the Hyundai for my car. It's been very good to me, is very low maintenance, has excellent gas mileage and is very reliable.

I've owned my 2003 Hyundai since then, and my car has run pristine since. I've upgraded the exterior, interior and performance, and still have yet to come across any problems.

The only thing I need to worry about is maintenance with tires and oil changes etc... but other than that, there is a ton of aftermarket parts for an Elantra, and it's a different car that you don't see everyday all doped out, which is exactly why I love Hyundai.
