2008 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2 liter

Summary:

Very good vehicle

General Comments:

So far this has been an impressive car, even though we just bought it 3 weeks ago.

It has a very solid feeling car, not cheap at all.

The car is peppy and handles very well.

We took a 600 mile trip with it and it is very quiet, even with strong head winds and doing 70 mph.

I had no problems passing slower vehicles at high speed.

It turns around 2100 rpm at 60 mph.

Got around 31 mpg with highway driving.

The sound system is quality with an impressive bass response.

Ours came with the XM radio and mp3 option, which is nice.

We got a very good price since we paid 12500 without tax and license. Couldn't even come close price wise with other cars of similar styling.

One thing I don't care for is that the speedometer goes up by 20 (20, 40, 60, 80, etc) for each number shown, which makes it harder to see what the speed is when glancing at the dash while driving.

I don't know how you DRIVE, but I'm doing 33.8 miles per gallon, and I need to test more times, because I think it will do more. My wife had it for 3 years, and was making 26/27.

Now that I have it, I'm making 29 city and 33.8 on the highway. I put my cruise control at 60mph on the highway, and I got so far 33.8, and I'm sure with more time I could get 35.

I wrote the original comment. My daughter just got in an accident on the freeway and was sandwiched between 2 vehicles.

The car is totaled, but my daughter wasn't injured except for bumps and bruises. I am really impressed, as the front of the car was totally smashed, but the cab, including windows, was intact, and my daughter was well protected. The one disturbing thing was she said the brakes locked up and she slid into the car in front. So much for anti-lock brakes.

Really sad as the car only had 40k and we never had a problem with it. I was looking forward to owning it for another 10 or 15 years.

Summary:

Good for the money

Faults:

One tire out of round on delivery, replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

We purchased (2) Elantras, both are identical 2008 GLS models with the popular equipment group. One is brand new. The other is a former rental with 18,000 miles on it. It looks and runs near new and had a clean car fax.

Overall these cars are good for the money. They ride and handle reasonably well and both are free of squeaks, rattles and water leaks. There is tons of features not normally found in budget cars - cruise, power windows, locks and mirrors, lighted vanity mirrors and fog lights.

Both have steel wheels with plastic wheel covers that are made to look like cast wheels. The covers are well done and held on with the 5 bolts that secure the wheel. No vibrations and they are true to the rim, unlike other snap on covers.

If there is a dark side, the paint on both cars has a fair amount of orange peel and unless kept waxed, the paint scratches easily. Panel fit is perfect on both cars. One car is Black Pearl Metallic and the other is Silver Metallic. Like most Asian cars painted silver or gray, the plastic bumper covers do not match perfectly in color when the sun hits it a certain way.

There was a fuel pump recall on the 2008 Elantra, which was done on both our cars before we took delivery, so we have no reliability issues to date.

They both have 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS that stop surely and smoothly.

Both cars have 4 speed automatic transmissions that work quietly and anticipate perfectly. Cruising at 80 mph is no problem, and top gear is tall so there is no engine noise at that speed with the engine barely turning 2700 rpm.

The engines start instantly. Smooth quiet idle, 30 mpg average. The 2.0 DOHC engine is loud on hard acceleration, especially past 4,000 rpm. Otherwise no complaints.

I changed the engine air filter and cabin air filter on the used car in about 15 minutes, it's a snap to work on. The cabin air filter is accessed by releasing the glove box door and removing a small panel in the air plenum. Great design.

Overall I cannot throw stones at these cars, I got both of them for under $25,000 and they are fresh, clean great running cars. That's a feat that cannot be done at many car stores, so keep it in mind when picking at any sore spots.
