Summary:

Cheap, but the rust will keep me from buying another Hyundai

Faults:

The Pony was my first new car, and as I like to say, everyone is allowed to make mistakes!

Way back in '86, I bought a new Pony because it was cheaper to buy it new than it was to buy a two year old Civic - I should have bought the Civic!

It was a GL model in white with a manual transmission.

I've never seen a vehicle before this or after it that rusted like this car. Seriously, within three weeks of taking it home, you could start to see small dots of rust. I took it back to the dealer, and they repainted the hatch where the rust was. However, it continued to rust all over, and after four Ontario winters, it was covered in surface rust. And on top of that, the engine was smoking at start-up. What a retched little car. I understand that a reason for the serious rust issues is that Hyundai uses recycled ship steel from their shipping division that has already been exposed to sea salt for 20+ years. Bad decision Hyundai.

General Comments:

Good on gas, cheap interior, horrible starting on cold mornings, rust, rust, rust and more rust!

The first Hyundais were beyond awful. My neighbours had an 85 Excel. They constantly worked on that car. I don't think they ever drove it. It was also a rustbucket. It's almost unreal to see how far Hyundai has come since then. I'd love to have a new Hyundai.

Summary:

Well worth $100cad

Faults:

It would shake and rattle at 110k/hr.

At the end of its life, it would die every other time I stopped. I did a lot of right hand turns, followed by a u-turn to avoid the reds.

It burned a lot of oil and wasn't good on gas for the size of car.

Couldn't make it up steep hills, but it never let me down on the back roads.

General Comments:

I beat it up by taking it off roading at least twice/week, and it never died leaving me stranded, and made it up hills. It was like it liked to have its engine working hard.

Easy in town driving bored the pony, and it would shut down, but take her out in the woods and she worked great and never let me down.

My pony was a very old car with a lot of clicks, and needed a lot of work. She only lasted about 3 months.

Summary:

Poor quality and performance, but cheap to run

Faults:

I have encountered many electrical problems with the car. Things have shorted out and left me stranded.

The seats are very worn and the interior is of very poor quality.

The body on the car is beginning to rust and fall apart.

Other than that it is just normal wear and tear problems.

General Comments:

This isn't a very good quality car, but it is not doing too bad considering it's age and the number of kilometers on it.

Summary:

It smokes... but its old enough to!

Faults:

Nothing has went wrong since I purchased it - however it is well worn.

General Comments:

I knew this car years before I bought it, it was a rust bucket then and remains. I needed a vehicle and at 300 I went for it.

It was supposed to stall every day, but a quick trip to a wrecking yard and one distributer later and hasn't stalled yet.

Since buying it I've cleaned it, repaired the exhaust, replaced the valve cover gasket etc (serious leaks), washed the engine bay, repaired the exhaust again.

The car is underpowered after 15 years or turbo cars, but it is comfortable enough and is very solid for a rice-burner.

Other than washing off the oil under the hood once a month, I expect to get a year or two out of this car before all the bondo falls off.

Summary:

Cheap, long lasting, simple!

Faults:

Valve seals don't last long. This only causes that annoying blue smoke.

Valve cover gasket leaks, very easy fix.

I have gone through a few alternators, but this is due to a killer 800 watt stereo system.

General Comments:

I have had 4 pony's over the last 12 years.

Very easy to work on or fix, very little I can not fix on these cars.

I think in the last 12 years including buying the cars I have probably spent no more than $2,000.
