1999 Hyundai Sonata GL 2.5

Summary:

A great car for the price, but you get what you pay for in the service area

Faults:

Recall on the mass-air sensor.

Fuel injector leaking.

Front brakes.

Faulty battery.

Engine is getting noisy.

Brakes are getting noisy.

General Comments:

The performance of this car is great overall. The 170 hp seems like a lot more. Acceleration, handling, braking are all acceptable or better.

The problems I have had seem typical of Hyundai. The dealer told me that the noise in the brakes is normal as the car gets older (that is not normal). There have been a few recalls, nothing serious.

My biggest complaint is with the dealer. They seem to feel that getting service is not a big rush. While the warranty is 10/100, it can sometimes be a pain to get the car in for a service in a reasonable timeframe.

I purchased two identical 1999 Sonata's from a local Hyundai dealership. Each had about 10,000 miles. At 18,000 miles my wife's car had to have the front brake rotor's turned because they were rusty. The dealership said that the car was not being driven enough and that rust had collected. At the time wife was driving between Cincinnati and Columbus in preparation for our daughter's wedding on a weekly basis. At 34,000 miles the car went in to the dealership's service department because of a grinding noise. The car had a dragging sensation also. The Service Department rep said that they had never seen that before and claimed user error. We were told that the car was being driven with the emergency brake in the "on" position. It would cost over four hundred dollars to repair with new pads and and rotors.

At 45,000 miles my car is now making a dragging sensation too. I would like to know if this is a coincidence or if there are other 1999 Sonata owners with similar complaints.

I am the one who placed the original comment here. Like I said, the 170 HP felt like a lot more, and I was always satisfied with the performance. I'd like to add another VERY important thing...SAFETY. Last week, someone ran a stop sign, and hit the passenger side of my Sonata at 55 mph. The airbag and side impact door beam saved my life. I walked out of the car with some cuts and bruises, mostly from glass and banging around. Everyone that has seen the car is amazed I lived... the entire car was destroyed. It the resale value was not HORRIBLE, we'd be buying a new one to replace it...

At the time of the accident, the car had 72,200 miles... and we hadn't had any problems other than what I listed initially. Overall, a solid car. The dealer just needed some help!!

1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6

Summary:

Hyundai gives you a lot of bang for the buck

Faults:

The Check Engine light came on a few times and the engine stalled, however this was the result of a wiring harness that had too much tension on it. It was easily remedied by just rerouting it.

The fabric for the seats are weak and separates at the stitching. When I take it to O'Hare Hyundai of Chicago Illinois they take care of these few problems I have had right away with no problems, and I get a free car wash every time.

General Comments:

The Sonata lacks the power I like, but does the job pretty well. I have really enjoyed this car, and I am looking forward to seeing what Hyundai will do next. I hear that the Tiburon is due to be revamped and will offer a V6.

1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.5 FI

Summary:

A piece of junk - don't buy one!!!

Faults:

THE DEALERSHIPS have been the biggest problem ever. They treat you with no respect and expect to be patted on the back for this. The company should be shut down and reviewed! Any questions.. call (440) 946-3116. And by the way, their warranty isn't worth anything... it's also a bunch of empty promises.... Ryan

General Comments:

To sum it up, please don't ever give in and buy any type of Hyundai. I bought the "highest quality" of the Hyundai's and have had numerous headaches since.

Hyunday Sonata 1999 V6 Black. Purchased brand new.

Previous owner of a Sonata 1992 - kept until 1999, very satisfied.

This car is comfortable, smooth and powerful, very costly in gas though.

COMPLAINTS:

Since the day I purchased the car I run frequently to the dealership. I have very good service but we have changed a large number of parts, from mechanical, to electronics, you name it.

I have spent a large number of hours in the dealership, a lot of money in taxi-fares for the family, and lost a lot of time from my work. In a lengthy letter to Hyundai Canada, the reply was: No use going to Hyundai Korea they will refer you to us. Do see your dealer, besides you were given a courtecy car(1)time only.

Reference and details of repairs and the letter to Customer service is available. My dealer is METRO HYUNDAI-5008, Bou. Decarie, Montreal, Que. Postal Code H3X-2H8, Tel.:(514)485-0001, Fax:(514)485-9518.

Note: I have driven for 32 years. The problems I encounter with this car are too many, for a young car. I am concerned about what will happen after the warranty expires. How can I finance the repairs if they continue in this rate.

This car I believe was not fit to hit the road. I am looking for similar cases to bring the matter to the next level.

My e-mail address is sarakcorfu@sprint.ca, available at any time. Any assistance you can provide would be beneficial. I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Car ID. KMHWF25V3XA112977 - Records of repairs are available with the dealer and with me.
