2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4 GDI
Summary:
I would do it all over again
Faults:
Lower rear control arms replaced under warranty at 39k miles.
Tires replaced at 28k miles.
General Comments:
Very nice build quality. No out of pocket repairs / maintenance so far, only some small warrantied items. First year of this style so I can't complain.
38.8 MPG on multiple long distance highway trips, 30+ local is not an issue. Very roomy and comfortable.
Brake wear is minimal if you drive it normally; dealer says my pads should be good until 100k+ at the rate I'm going.
Nice ride quality.
Some road noise, but for 20k flat what does one expect to get?
Good visibility all around, very easy to change your own air and cabin filters.
Massive trunk.
Well laid out and lit dash/cluster.
Transmission is responsive, and it has a fun Tiptronic mode!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

This confirms about every thought I've had when test driving the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima. Snappy performance, but expensive looking gimmicky materials are used to mask a modern cheaply built and poorly designed car.
They are both pretty attractive cars till you "scratch the surface" a bit and do some real research. I had a Hyundai car salesman last summer try to keep turning up the stereo and A/C to mask the road noise. And I did smell antifreeze on one car that I test drove; the salesman tried to play it off as nothing. The base models rode fairly smooth and firm, any of them with the sport suspension were like you said, bone-jarring. I have a 2004 Ford Mustang with 140,000 miles that rides smoother than the new Sonata SE that I test-drove.
