1998 Hyundai Tiburon FX 2.0

Summary:

I would only recommend this car to anyone willing to pay lots for repairs, very disappointed

Faults:

Since I purchased this car, almost immediately things started flying apart. First the voltage regulator in the alternator went, so I took it back to the dealership. I think their mechanics got their licenses out of a cereal box because I spent over $200 for them to tell me it was the battery, which was brand new. So after I found out it was not the battery and it was in fact the voltage regulator in the alternator, I got a new alternator and fixed it myself. So very poor service from the dealership on this occasion.

After the alternator, went the flex pipe on the exhaust, no big deal, but it cost me $250 for the part. Obviously, I fixed that myself as well.

After that, the plug wires went and it costed me $110 for those as well.

Then the biggest problem, all four wheel bearings went. The car is now sitting in my driveway until I come up with $700 to fix those (parts and labor included).

The car also will not start as quick after a fill up. I had the dealership check this out and they cannot figure out what the problem is, but I think it is the vent on the fuel filler neck. And occasionally you have to fill the car up slowly or it will spit back at you.

General Comments:

I have had this car for only three months and I have already forked out over $1000 on repairs. Not only that, but the dealership would not offer me a warranty when I bought it because they said it would be pointless because it was in such good condition. Pf!! Ya right!

Other than the repairs, when running good, this car has a lot of potential and gets a lot of curious looks from other drivers and people on the street.

I suggest not buying your parts from the dealer, or getting them to do the labour. Of course some things you have buy there, but just like any other dealer, they charge way too much, at least double. Wheel bearings should only be about $40 each, online like $25 each. Even if the dealer charges you $60 each, that's $240, so they are charging you like $460 for labour??? LOL that is crazy, and you're crazy if you pay them that much, if you can take it some where else for a lot cheaper.

My husband does most of the work on our 98 and 00 Tibs, which obviously saves a lot, but we could do all four bearings, brakes, and rotors for around the same, or probably less than $700.

Sorry you have been having so many problems, like I said we own 2 and my husband used to have a 97', before the ones we have, and haven't had too many problems.

1998 Hyundai Tiburon 2.0

Summary:

Great looking car, but it is a money pit

Faults:

A new transmission at 53,000km. Another transmission at 111,000km. A new throttle sensor. 2 ECM (computers). Interior light does not work (never did). The seats belts do do roll back up so they are always getting stuck in the car door. Not bad for owning the car for almost 16 months.

General Comments:

I do love the look and the way the car drives, but it not reliable and I am a single woman who takes the highway to work everyday.

The service I received from the dealership was terrible.

The seat belt is on recall so you should be able to get that fixed.

Summary:

Great looking car with much potential

Faults:

Glove box latch broke.

General Comments:

Really nice car to get around town or jump on the highway with.

It has decent acceleration, and an ample power band.

You also don't see these cars on the road everyday, so it gets a lot of looks.

All around great car.
