2000 Isuzu Trooper LS V6

Summary:

If Isuzu could have only made one model, and this had been it, they would still be in the US

Faults:

3 batteries.

1 set of tires.

The 'hold-it-open' on the left tailgate broke.

1 taillight blew out (left).

1 door handle came off (front passenger).

General Comments:

Very comfortable, but needs front-seat armrests.

SWEET TRANSMISSION! I also like how there is an indicator on the dash telling you to shift.

I really like the tailgate feature.

The rear seats are somewhat hard to fold.

I wish the side mirrors were bigger.

I would have liked 6-passenger seating - quad buckets and a disappearing 2-passenger 3rd row bench.

Looks sharp.

The 4X4 and Torque-On-Demand are excellent.

Gets 13 MPG fully loaded in the city. I have gotten 22 on the highway no weight.

I go through batteries because I don't drive it a whole lot.

I would have liked a cargo cover and a cargo net.

I highly recommend this truck.

2000 Isuzu Trooper LS 3.5 V6 Gas

Summary:

Great buy, shame they don't make them anymore

Faults:

One starting issue at around 20K, vacuum hose issue.

Tires went through in no time (Wrangler AT's) - 15K.

Bridgestone AT Revo's lasted the next 50K.

Lifters started with light noise in the 20's loud by the 50's.

Very loud issues with timing belt at 75K, tensioner problem - just replaced both and following comments here moved to 10-30 synthetic. Sounds like it has 20K on the engine again!

General Comments:

Solid reliable SUV, very low maintenance costs.

MPG acceptable 15-16MPG city - 18+ highway.

Never failed to start in 9 years, except at the end of the first battery - Costco battery still going strong after 6 years. Park in airport in winter, in Denver - starts first time after 3 weeks parked!

Great value, comfortable ride. Good off road, one of the few real SUV's which can do the job when it's in the dirt.

No more Isuzus for me or anyone now, not new in the US anyway - and they've not been selling real Isuzu Motor Co. vehicle for a number of years anyway.

With only 75K after 9 years, I'm hoping to make it to 15 years!!!

2000 Isuzu Trooper LS 3.5

Faults:

Owned a 93 Trooper that drove me nuts for 150k and then I sold it. But they offered 120K warranty in 2000 so I took a chance. At 64K a rod went. Isuzu replaced Engine.

At 96K the tranny went out, Isuzu replaced it. I had a vibration that appeared at 65 mph and at 80 mph. (yah I know about speeding) so Isuzu replaced the transfer case, the tranny, and an Axle (My cost for axle). Still a vibration. Isuzu gave up and told me not to drive 80 Then at 119467 The rod went again. New Long block. At 145K the tranny is out again. Turns out it wasn't installed correctly. Now we get to fight it out. No more Isuzu's for me.

2000 Isuzu Trooper LS 3.5 litre gas

Summary:

Acceptable, but not too plush

Faults:

The only problem has been related to a fuel line recall and that was not actually a problem unless there was an accident.

General Comments:

This is my second Isuzu product, the first was a 1987 pickup. The only items that have been replaced on my Trooper are Oil and filters, hoses, PCV, belts and tires. The tires actually lasted 78,000 miles and didn't need replacing, but I was able to purchase a new set quite reasonably. Amazingly the brake pads are still original and I do tow a 5000 lb boat often. I know the parts for this model are pricey and "knock on wood" I hope to not need too many in the future. I use Mobil 1 10w-30 and don't experience the oil consumption that others have alluded too. I did maintenance on the EGR port behind the air flow meter as recommended by my local dealer. One note on the oil consumption, I replaced the PCV valve just for the heck of it @ 30k and when comparing the new with the old I noticed the new one had a sustantioally smaller orifice. Perhaps that impacted the oil consumption.
