1982 Jaguar XJ6 4.2L

Summary:

It fits like a glove and drives like silk

Faults:

So far not a thing except a leaky steering rack which I am replacing. The A/C blows cold and the car runs smooth as silk and is turning heads wherever I go. I purchased vehicle from first buyer who purchased it new in 83 and maintained it perfectly. The interior and exterior are original and mint; the colour is a mid blue with a navy blue leather interior that is still supple and clean. No cracks on the beautiful wood dash and the chrome is pristine. I was lucky to find it.

1982 Jaguar XJ6 XJ-6 6 cylinder

Summary:

If automobile repair is your hobby, this is the car you need

Faults:

Repetitive torque converter failures. The first time I pulled the transmission it took seven hours. The last time (#7), I had it on the workbench in 1 hour 15 minutes.

The torque converter shaft broke 6 times. The very first transmission failure was a sheared output shaft. A Jaguar parts dealer said that the original shaft was insufficiently heat treated. I installed the new shaft and it was trouble free. Another dealer told me (after the sixth torque converter failure) that Jaguar had redesigned the flywheel for these engines. Seems as if the torque converter shafts were breaking!

I purchased a new flywheel. (One must hold their breath when asking for a quote on Jaguar parts). Once installed, the torque converter failures ceased.

Another aggravation was the Lucas electrical equipment. They should have designated each electrical component in the car as "intermittent"!

The engine would frequently lose oil pressure on a sharp left turn. This was with a full complement of 11 quarts of oil. The pressure would restore itself quickly, but there were much concern about the damage being done to that $4,000 engine. I removed the oil pan for inspection. It was spotless and the oil pickup was clean. I noted the placement of an oil baffle that prevented oil from overfilling the left side of the pan on a left turn, but there was no baffle for the same function for a right turn. I fabricated one similar to the existing left side baffle and installed it. End of problem! How long had Jaguar made that engine?

A friend of mine once owned an XK. When I told him that I had purchased this vehicle, he stated that I would tow it more miles than it would be driven. How right he was! Renting tow dollies got so expensive that I finally fabricated a custom tow bar to fit the appropriately installed towing eyes on the front of the Jaguar.

However, I must say, when it was running... what an absolute joy to drive! Superb handling, plenty of power (despite it's weight) and fast!

I must be a very lucky person; I owned a 1982 XJ6 for five years, put nearly 75,000 miles on it, and had almost no trouble with the car.

When purchased out of a barn where it had been for ten years, the owner told me it was "impossible" to make it run. After replacing the stopped-up catalytic converters, I enjoyed half a decade of trouble-free motoring, much to the chagrin of the previous owner.

I did replace the water pump once. Cost from a good Jaguar aftermarket parts guy: $50.

I sold the car to a young man in high school whose mechanic father rebuilt the front end (at over 100,000 miles it was due). He is still driving it at university.

I think a lot of Jaguar's bad press comes from people who aren't "car people". You have to take care of the car. You need to belong to the club. You need to make friends in the parts and service community. You need to be able to do simple mechanical service yourself. It sounds like this reviewer was a pretty fair mechanic; maybe he just bought an abused example. This is a common problem with these cars. Original owners (especially in the US) often drove the poor things until they broke, then drove them some more. I hope our reviewer finds a place in his garage for a tidy, well kept cat in the future.

I bought my 82 XJ6 over three years ago, almost 30 years old, not quite, at 40,000 original miles I had heard the stories, but at 51 I wanted a Jag. I had been reading about the problems with the transmissions so I was prepared to deal with that problem if need be! Sure enough, it be needed!

I decided to have the front end completely redone, I could have driven it the way it was, but I wanted to get rid of those little metal on metal noises a car gets when they are old!

I now am pleased to say I have a lovely riding dependable (you heard right) Jaguar XJ6. The key is knowing a good dependable, honest mechanic! (they do exist) and actually if you know where to shop, parts are actually cheaper than most high end Japanese car parts! The jag 6cyl engine is bullet proof, well I think so! I love my CAT!

The XJ6 is a beautiful car IF you put a Chevy V8 engine in it. THEN you have the luxury, looks, and RELIABILITY along with an added bonus... Mind blowing performance and the ability to lay rubber at stoplights and leave people wondering how in $) #$ that Jaguar just blew their doors off!!

A V8 Chevy JAG is one of the BEST cars you could ever own!!
