1985 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 liter inline 6

Summary:

Cheap thrills

Faults:

Plenty has gone wrong. The light switch failed leaving me with no head lights. The fuel tank switch over has failed, so I only use one tank. Several lights had to be replaced. Mechanically the car is quite sound.

General Comments:

A joy to drive. Fast with awesome handling... very, very comfortable. I have been able to save a lot of money by buying parts on eBay. The light switch for exampleis $185.00 at the dealer, but only $9.00 on eBay. I just like the way the car looks. It still turns heads. Very comfortable for long drives. By 1985, the XJ6 was pretty much sorted out. I have found it to reliable. They are so cheap to buy and the availability of parts makes them not so terribly expensive to run, no matter what people say about them... Hey if you want to enjoy driving again and are bored with the cold soulless Japanese products...go for it!!

1985 Jaguar XJ6 6 cylinder

Summary:

Unreliable money machine

Faults:

Replaced all power window switches. All front suspension rubber bushings. Rear brake calipers leaked, had to replaced them, and boy what a terror that was!

Starter replaced. Alternator replaced. A number of electrical bugs throughout the car. One day something would work, the next day it wouldn't.

General Comments:

You better have deep pockets if you plan on owning one of these vehicles. Prices for parts are expensive, but the labor will kill you! I learned to do most, if not all of the necessary repairs myself. One of the hardest things I encountered was replacing the rear brake calipers. I had to drop the whole rear end of the car to get them out! Maybe there's an easier way I don't know.?.

Maybe a Chevy 350 conversion would make it more reliable!

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

1985 XJ6 Jaguar-

I owned a beautiful XJ6, silver with a navy blue interior and it rode like a dream. I paid $5000 for it in 2000, I sold it a few years later for $4000 and I put about $5000 into it. The most expensive item cost me $2200 and that was a new transmission. But the other repairs were things like tires, air conditioner fixing, minor engine repairs, and brakes. Yes, the labor is expensive, but isn't all car labor expensive anywhere nowadays? I loved the car, it performed like a champ, and was the car of my dreams. I had to sell it because I was going back to school and needed the money. I am currently looking for another XJ6. You don't buy a Jaguar for economy, you buy it for looks and comfort. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

My buddy just bought one of these from a private seller (the original owner), who maintained it and kept decent records.. but like any car this age, you must make sure that it's up-to-date on all of its RECALLS. Lots of time has gone by and manufacturing defects tend to pile up after a decade.

Don't risk your safety, as well the safety of your passengers, fellow-drivers, etc.. by not being certain of defect status.
