1990 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign 4.0L

Summary:

What a joke!

Faults:

Everything!!! I had to replace just about all electronic parts and sensors. The heating control, rear end, on board computer, mufflers, sunroof motor, rear defrost, radio, and many other parts.

Don't buy this car, what a lemon. As you can see it only has 40,000 miles on it, should I have so much trouble? Very unhappy with this product, Jaguar is nothing but a name!

Same experience on this side of the Atlantic. Bulb failure modules, spurious warning lights, rear axle noise, harsh automatic gearshifts, excessive and uneven tyre wear, suspension bushes, oil leaks, intermittent power steering when cold, rear shock absorbers leaking (repeatedly), wind noise and waterleaks from the doors. The list was endless. One too many 6-page service bills from the dealer and I got off the merry-go-round. Phew!!

Faults:

I replaced the water pump at 115,000 miles. The onboard diagnostics are a bit touchy - they will indicate that a tail light bulb is out when in fact it's working, for instance.

The A/C compressor failed at 125,000 miles.

General Comments:

Very reliable car, especially considering its undeserved reputation for unreliabilty. I've owned two others - one an '89, the other a '90. Both were delightful cars.

These cars depreciate in value rapidly, which makes them incredible value on the used car market.

I need your help! I just purchased a 1990 Jaguar XJ6 4 door sedan. I just love this car. However, I took it to have an oil change, but the mechanic stripped the threads on the oil pan. I had to call the automobile club to tow my car home. What can I do at this stage. Are there any solutions to this unfortunate problem? PLEASE advise me. Awaiting your reply.

Easy fix!

The CHEAP route is to purchase Jaguar's repair kit.

You can get it from a dealer, if they'll put out the effort for a car that old (NOT likely), or buy one from Jaguarclassicparts.com while they last.

You could also buy a used oil pan from a junkyard.

Whichever path you choose to take, you should have the repair garage pay for the repairs, suing if necessary. It's their fault the threads were stripped!

Faults:

I had to replace the water pump, the exhaust system (only because the previous owner had a cheap one put in.) And some occasional quirks... The antenna won't go down all the way sometimes. The power seat adjustment fails on occasion. The right rear power door lock doesn't work every time.

General Comments:

Quite powerful. Not very expensive to run in US with cheap fuel costs. Very luxurious and now affordable. Why pay more for a newer economy car?

Yes! Basically a good motor.

Getting on for 200,000 miles in mine.

Had to have new a head gasket set and replaced the timing chain whilst about it.

New real wheel bearings at the back.

Only irritating problem has been abnormal tyre (tire) wear on the front inside edges. Can't seem to fix this. Mainly on the offside.

Any comments may result in me going for the 300,000 mile mark.

I recently purchased a 1990 xj6 Soverin.I purchased the car for a mere seven hundred dollars. There are only a couple things wrong the car had been broken into they stole the head rests they had the TVs. And of course the speakers and CD player and the caps from the wheels, but other than that its beauttiful...

Sounds like you've had faulty wheel balancing.
