1998 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0 V6

Summary:

Dependable but would not recommend..

Faults:

Ball Joints like to break at least once a year.

Rear end needs rebuilt, cost $4,000 from dealership though, only paid $5,000 for vehicle, will get rid of it before getting rear end rebuilt.

Heater does not work (blower went out).

Headlights get water in them, and it stays in there for months (no off-road driving or anything).

Engine is loud, even when parked with engine running.

Hit fresh snowbank going around 5mph and front driver side fender came loose.

Leather seats cracked and falling apart (all of them, nobody is even ever in the back one).

Power windows don't always work.

Clock spring broke, seems to be a common jeep problem.

Tailgate doesn't always open like it is suppose to, have to push and hold it down most of the time to get it to open.

Very bumpy ride (on-road).

Very little backseat room if you did have to sit back there (luckily I don't)

General Comments:

Would not buy another, very uncomfortable and prone to problems.

Still runs, not sure for how much longer though.

Of course it is a bumpy ride! It's a Jeep! You want a non-bumpy vehicle that you can go anywhere in? I don't have an answer for that. Go buy a Cadillac then.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0

Summary:

Trusted and very solid

General Comments:

This car is the best I ever owned. Handles very well and is very comfortable. Never had any problem with it. It's solid like tank.

4X4 works well off road. It is expensive on fuel, but has great power running up on hill.

This is one of the best sport utilities today. Will keep it forever.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 I6

Summary:

Wonderful

Faults:

Plugged and rattling catalytic converter at about 150,000.

Front wheel hubs at 170,000.

Neutral safety switch needed adjustment at 167,000.

Suspension at 170,000.

Water pump at 138,000.

Cylinder head at 138,000 due to previous driver overheating and continuing to drive.

General Comments:

Still has great power at 171341 miles.

Great ride.

Been in an accident at 30 mph with a steel state park gate and fixed in the driveway. Very durable.

I get 15mpg city. And at over $3 a gallon...

The body is in great shape, no rust and for living in Massachusetts winters that's saying a lot.

I will never own anything else if I can help it.

Too bad they stopped making the Cherokee.

With basic repairs and maintenance these Cherokees will run forever. Even if Daimler Chrysler has given up on them the aftermarket hasn't. They have more of a following now more than they did while still in production.

1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 I6

Summary:

Cheap to own, aside from gas

Faults:

The axle shaft U-joint went bad and was making a terrible clicking for months before I tried to fix it on my own. The dealership wanted 400, the backyard garage wanted 300 and I did the job myself for 25.00 after the cost of renting the huge socket. I'm no mechanic, in fact I'm a nerd programmer by day. Other than that, its been awesome!

General Comments:

This jeep is a bit of a gas hog. I drive reasonable on the highway and I'm lucky to get 20-25 miles to the gallon. If you're looking for something that's easy on gas, this isn't it. But, for the cost of low repairs, the fact that it always starts in sub zero temps and plus 100 temps, the fact that its unstopable in the snow are all factors to consider. I wouldn't think twice (providing I could afford the gas) on driving this thing anywhere in the nation.

The interior isn't really luxurious... well, not at all really. But, its practical. I don't have a lot of gadgets to break on me, nor are the parts really expensive if they do break.

I've had it three years and had very little troubles with it. Aside from routine nonsense like oil and tires its cost me 25.00 in repairs total.
