1984 Jeep CJ7 Laredo 256

Summary:

The freedom it gives you is just phenomenal

Faults:

I can't think of any major mechanical concerns I've had with the vehicle, other than regular maintenance things like the water pump going.

It has excessive wind noise when highway driving, along with many air leaks with the hard doors and fiberglass roof on.

The ride is very choppy, steering can be too responsive (shooting to the ditch), and if there are high winds, it can really push you around on the road.

The heater is poor in the winter.

And it can be very uncomfortable as a daily driver.

General Comments:

It's a Jeep!

It's not a luxury car, speed machine, or a practical family hauler.

It was built to have fun in and that's exactly what I love about it.

I'm not the typical off-roading guy, and wouldn't want to do it with this one as it is in amazing condition, and I fuss over having it extremely clean. Other Jeep owners take the opposite approach though. Either way, Jeep owners respect other Jeep owners and wave at each other driving down the road as we are family. Honda marketers are trying to launch this with their cars, but it will never hold strong much like the passion us Jeep owners possess.

I use my Jeep only as a summer weekend vehicle now, and can't explain the feeling I get when I'm cruising down the beach with no doors and top off. All the little annoying problems it comes with seem to just slip from your mind.

1984 Jeep CJ7 4.2L I6

Summary:

An off road monster

Faults:

There is some moderate rust.

Fuel pump gave out at 100,000 miles.

Broken steering stabilizer (hit on rock).

Transmission leaks fluid, had to have it re-sealed.

Seats are pretty worn.

Clutch makes buzzing noise (new bearing required).

Really difficult steering.

General Comments:

It is the most fun that I've ever had driving a vehicle! Its really pleasant to open the top on a nice day. I love the open air feeling when the top is removed.

The jeep is a fun truck to drive off road. The short wheelbase is useful when driving in rough terrain.

However, all of this fun comes at a price.

My jeep does not have power steering and therefore is extremely difficult to turn, especially at low speeds. Also, it tends to be difficult to control at higher speeds.

As you would expect, its not a very comfortable vehicle. It is small and cramped, and there is barely room for 4 people.

If you are a person who likes to go off roading, then this is the vehicle for you. Its not the most fun to drive around town.

In my opinion, the fun of the open top more than compensates for the lack of comfort and handling.

I love my cj7 its true what they say about real jeeps being built not bought, I have a 84 renegade and I'm fixing to rebuild the motor after 135,000 miles I love my "Jezzebee". I've spent most of the money I've made in the Marine Corps on it just little things here and there, but its my baby so I try to spoil it. The body of the jeep is a little rough, but it's a lot better than most its age and the frames in great condition.

I have been a Jeep enthusiast for my entire life and love to see I am not the only one. I am from and still living in Nova Scotia,Canada. Here we have a problem with rust and I cannot buy a steel jeep tub made in North America, I am using a fibreglass tub kit instead. I have been restoring my CJ7 from the frame up for the last 7 years and I am still enjoying the project. What is amazing about the restoration project is the condition of the parts when completely disassembled. Now all the parts have been stripped cleaned and painted (not done from factory) and this should take care of my corrosion problem. Thank you for your time and keeping the Jeeping alive.

Kim from Canada.

1984 Jeep CJ7 256 inline 6

Summary:

This is a really nice Jeep for the price I paid for it

Faults:

I had a few problems with the carburetor.

I had to replace my distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires.

My seats have worn quite a bit.

The steering stabilizer went out before I bought it.

I took a curve too fast and almost flipped which caused the body to twist and the driver side sits about two inches lower than the passenger side.

My head gasket has a small leak.

My fuel lines have developed a leak, but I haven't replaced them yet.

Other than that just general maintenance.

General Comments:

My Jeep is really nice to play with even though I still have the street tires on it.

This Jeep is more fun to play with than any other vehicle I have ever driven.

I am also getting ready to start restoring my Jeep.
