1986 Jeep CJ7 Renegade 6 cylinder

It's a fun car, but not for 2008 highway transportation

Shortly after I bought it (I am third owner) this CJ7 would immediately die at a stop light, etc., and so was unreliable. Rather than continue to fight the carb, I replaced it with a Howell Engr TBFI kit, then fought serious detonation issue for quite a while. Finally, in desperation, I trailered the vehicle to Collins Bros in Wiley, TX, and they 100% eliminated the detonation issue, although they stated they didn't know what one thing fixed it. Runs GREAT now, and is fun to travel in.

Replaced original plastic valve cover with aluminum one to stop an oil leak. Okay now.

General Comments:

No other issues. Love it.

That's wild. I bought a brand new 1986 Jeep CJ7 Renegade, and it also would just die going down the street. I took it back to dealer 2 or 3 times before they found that the emergency brake pedal was rubbing a wire that was shorting out the cruise control, therefore killing the motor. They fixed it and it never happened again.

Nothing beats a CJ7

The 2.5L four that came with it had a myriad of problems with carburetor/emissions/ignition. So I junked it in favor of a 4.2L six. That fell right in and with aftermarket carburetor (which eliminated a recycling bin filled with miles of harnesses and vacuum lines), no problems other than it needs a fuel pump now.

General Comments:

The thing has got torque, a little light in the horsepower department, but it moves the Jeep along quite nicely.

Everything still works as it should.

The seats are comfortable, they don't recline though.

Unstoppable on or off-road.

Built like a tank, and rides like one too.

A Jeep is not a Car.

I'm glad I found this site. I'm looking for a CJ7 to use around the farm and town. My friend motivated me to get one when he recently bought a CJ7.

Looking forward to getting my CJ7

A jeep is a vehicle that was born in the heat of the battle, it is a warrior and not a city car. If you like the comfort of the city car and the¨tough¨look get a H2 or a japanese car. Jeep is a vehicle that will take you the place you want to go. You can go faster in another car, but in a jeep you can go anywere.

PS. Get a GEO.

There's only one...

Besides everything, nothing.

Steering box.

Steering pump.

Distributor and coil.

Need I go on...

General Comments:

I have loved Jeeps sence I was 2 years old. There is something about a Jeep that makes me have to have one. Maybe it is the ever present leaking oil and broken parts (performance enhancement oppertunities).

But it is probably the fact that you can take the top and doors off on a sunny day and drive like you own the world. Or the fact that nothing can stop you, on or off roads (except a gas station). Or maybe it's just the fact that they are the coolest vehicles on the road. I really don't know anyone who doesn't like my Jeep.
