1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Straight 6

Summary:

If you can afford the gas, buy it

Faults:

Computer went out... who cares..

Needed one motor mount... big deal... that's all folks.

NUMBER ONE PROBLEM... 11mpg city and 15mpg highway.

General Comments:

I have jumped... rolled... rammed and drove through tons of mud, and this thing keeps going.

I have had it up to 125mph (very unsteady at this speed...).

I put on Gibson headers, a Flowmaster exhaust, K&N filter jet chip, and this little 4L straight six should be good for another 130000 miles or more...

Buy this car; you CAN rely on it as long as you do proper upkeep.

125 mph. Hahahaha that's funny, I had my 94 Grand Vherokee up to about 120 mph. And yeah it shakes like crazy. I mean 1) it's a Jeep.. not a Lambo :P and 2) the speedometer only goes up to 100.. so that says something :P.

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2 V8

Summary:

Great vehicle, but costly

Faults:

Rear main seal leaked at 140,000 miles.

Exhaust fell off at 150,000 miles.

Rear window wiper motor failed at 150,000 miles.

Radiator rotted out at 160,000 miles.

Transmission blew at 170,000 miles.

Transmission radiator leaked at 180,000 miles.

Master cylinder failed at 180,000 miles.

Half-shaft blew to smithereens at 190,000 miles.

Multiple CV joints replaced every other year.

General Comments:

I bought this vehicle in 2001 in pristine condition. The first 20,000 - 25,000 miles I owned it were great - just scheduled maintenance was all that was necessary to keep it going. Then around 140,000 miles things started seriously braking. Things just kept falling apart. Let me point out that I was religious in my maintenance on the vehicle - oil changed every 3,000 miles. All other fluids changed before scheduled/recommended intervals.

Also, the bottoms of all 4 doors and the tailgate began seriously rusting at about 180,000 miles (2007).

That being said, I beat the heck out of this thing. The 318 (5.2) V8 is totally bulletproof - there is no killing it. This engine is easily going to make it to 200,000 miles, and still has tons of power (I just smoked a BMW 318 last week).

I make it down trails that other so-called SUVs get stuck in. I "parked" it in about 3 feet of snow (the front wheels were totally covered), came back 2 hours later, put it in 4 Low and crawled right out - I barley touched the gas. A newer S-10 Blazer and a Ford Explorer tried the same thing and were still stuck when I left...

Luckily, I performed most of the listed repairs myself, which saved tons of money. If I had to pay for all of those repairs I would have junked this thing a long time ago - the repair costs would have far outweighed the value of the vehicle.

I use this as a daily driver and commute to and from work in it. I'm using it for 80% city driving, and as a result get a measly 11-12 MPG (but what do you expect from a 5.2 V8). Highway driving I'm getting around 14 MPG.

Overall, this was a great vehicle. If you're buying a used one, try to get one with low miles. Be prepared for serious repairs starting around 150,000 miles.

I bought mine in 2001, and have had no problems besides rear drums and brakes that gave out on vacation.

General Comments:

My parents bought this Jeep used in 1996 with 16,000 miles on her. It was originally my mom's car, although when I hit 16 (in 2001) suddenly it became mine. Probably due to the fact that my dad got a new car, my mom got his Wrangler and I got the GC.

But, for as long as I've been driving the truck, its been a fine, strong runner. I often refer to her as a "pit bull". Smaller than most SUVs, yet surprisingly tough, agile and incredibly strong.

She can up and light off the line like a muscle car, and with the current rig of the exhaust, sounds like one too.

For a light truck, it always surprises everyone by just how well it handles, deadens sound and runs smoothly considering the miles and age of it.

I do take her off-roading on occasion and she always shine both on and off road, handling like a true Jeep should. I like it because it's still small enough to get into and out of tight places, yet big enough to fit a bunch of people or stuff into. Like the commercials say; and its completely true... it is IMPOSSIBLE not to have fun in a Jeep.

Now aside from a few replaced parts that have broken or worn out over the many years of operation, this truck has been very reliable to me over many, many years now.

I change the oil on her every three thousand, maintain fluids and general care, and she continues to blow the doors off of Mustangs.

The interior is beyond comfortable, and still to this day makes road trips feel like nothing. I love being able to sit in the old girl and not feel restless.

Overall, it's a good, solid running truck (thanks to the indestructible Chrysler 318) and I plan on having it for many more years to come.

I'm thinking about getting the exact model (94 V8 5.2L)

Is it true when people say this vehicle could easily roll? And the one I'm looking at has 250K. I want it mainly as my first offroading car. Is that too much?

"Is it true when people say this vehicle could easily roll?"

Hmm, tall, top-heavy SUV... Yeah, it'll roll.

My jeep rides rough, and my brakes are not too hot either. I want to get a lift, but I'm worried it might hurt my Jeep. What do you think?
