2002 Jeep Liberty KJ 3.7

Summary:

3.7 is a huge P.O.S. - rest is OK

Faults:

Check engine light came on while driving it home the day I bought it.

I had to replace 2 injectors, 2 plugs and 2 coils. this seemed to cure the problem for about 1 month. then the light was back on. P0304 was the code and dealer said it was my problem now, only 30 days warranty on used car.

Despite the engine light always being on it seemed to run just fine.

General Comments:

The thing has plenty of power and is very fun to drive.

However it's handling is very mushy and feels like it's going to tip over a lot.

This jeep gets the worst gas mileage of any SUV I've ever owned. not even close to it's EPA rating.

P0304 is a misfire in Cylinder number 4. If you have a mis fire, you are going to notice it running rough, and your gas mileage will plummit. This was probably the source of the bad mileage.

I'm also getting a p0304 code as well, I change plugs, switched around the coil packs, tried a brand new coil pack, and even switched injectors 4 and 6 around, I'm still geting a code, and ruff idle, and poor mileage, had you come up with a fix with your problem yet, or does anyone have any suguestions.

The problem everyone is having is the oil that feeds the timing chain is starting to clog. I recommend an oil flush ASAP, as if this clogs all the way the timing will skip and now you have major problems... Everyone please watch this, as if you do any highway driving it will fail and you will need a tow. Also watch the plastic intake runner, and look if it is starting to melt, as this is a sign it is too late. This is a common problem after 50,000 miles, and if you wait you will need a new motor...

2002 Jeep Liberty Limited V6 3.7litre

Summary:

Only in a Jeep!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I have driven 124,000 km with my Jeep and I love it.

No major problems at all.

I was hit from the rear wheel and the Jeep spun around 3 times and did not tip.

I was caught in an unexpected snow storm and my Jeep got me home safely with 15 to 20 cm of snow on the road.

2002 Jeep Liberty Limited V6

Summary:

Better off road than on

Faults:

I have had no major mechanical problems with the Jeep.

General Comments:

Make no mistake, if you are buying a Liberty you are buying a truck-like ride. The Liberty does not "ride like a car" as advertised. There is a lot of wind noise while driving over 70mph on the highway.

I have taken the Jeep off road on several occasions in northern Michigan and it handles beautifully. It is amazing the size of hills and bumps that the Jeep can handle effortlessly.

The interior of the Liberty is nice with the leather and sunroof. The only factor I do not enjoy is the lack of leg support on the seats, they are very small and do not support your entire legs.

Overall, the Liberty does everything it is supposed to do. It is adequate on the road, and excellent off of the road. I however, will probably not buy another Jeep because I hardly ever go off the road and want to find something that rides more like a car on the highway such as the Honda Pilot, Chevy Equinox, or Toyota Highlander.

The Liberty is thirsty for gas, I'm not complaining, you have to expect that when you buy a V6 4WD SUV. Also, I once hit a deer with the Liberty and the Jeep handled like a tank. I have felt very safe in this car as far as impacting other objects is concerned.

However, one time I did end up off of the road and in the ditch when I was on a sheet of ice, even with 4WD engaged.

Overall, it's a good vehicle, but not great.

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was crazy, complaining about the wind noise and the leg support and the lack of foot space for the driver's right leg. I bought mine yesterday and was so excited--it's such a nice car with lots of goodies, but I'm returning it tomorrow. I think driving it 500 miles a week and only the occasional off road trip will be really trying...
