2005 Kia Sorento LX

Summary:

It's a piece of crap

Faults:

Gas tank light never works properly. Always says near empty or empty when there is at most half a tank left.

Head/tail lights always go out.

Inside dash board lights flash at times.

Driver's seat barely moves back & forth anymore, from the automatic leverage button.

Full brake system already replaced. Now onto new rotors.

Wiper blades never last.

Gas guzzler...

So basically what you are saying is that there are no mechanical problems, and only a few electrical problems, which is normal for a 6 year old vehicle.

Not bad at all. Thank you.

I had to diagnose one with electrical issues. It was obvious that a number of mechanics have tried before. I quit with no charge after noticing weak and vulnerable wiring. To make it short: overall bad design prone to short time failure. No support and know how from Kia.

It's not at all common for a 6 year old car to have electrical problems. What on earth are you driving? Both my cars are Toyotas, 1 is 18 years old, the other is 22 years old and they have NEVER let me down, mechanically or electrically. And that has been the case with any car I've owned before.

2005 Kia Sorento EX RWD Leather 3.5L

Summary:

Kia's flagship, get it before it costs like Toyota etc

Faults:

Digital climate control display does funny things when it's cold in the mornings.

A few times after reclining the driver's seat, it did not want to come up for some reason. Don't have the issue any more though.

When fuel gets low, the gauge kind of goes up and down. Gas light turns on and off. I just set my mileage counter at zero, and refuel at 200-220 miles.

Sometimes when you adjust the stereo sound settings, it tends to reset to manufacturer settings (great sound though if you have the Delco amplified stereo found in my 05 EX).

At 105k, driver's leather seat seams started to separate (maybe about time).

Used to start kind of bad, but when I stopped using cheap gas, problem has never came back.

General Comments:

The jeep is really a nice SUV. It sits on a truck frame. I have the rear wheel drive, and it feels like a Lexus LS400 that I previously owned. I would recommend this car to a friend.

Only thing that I would like Kia to improve on the Sorento is the fuel economy. For a 2005, I get 17mpg. Kind of low in my opinion. Freeway and city are about the same on the mpg's. Best ever on a cruise at 70 about 19 miles. It gets awesome mpg's (23 or so) if you drive 50mph, which is not common.

Ride quality is excellent. Similar to Lexus.

Engine performance is great.

The transmission is very comfortable (auto 5 speed).

Does not kick out of gear when you add throttle, instead uses the engine torque to accelerate. Transmission is similar to a V-8 setup. If you have ever enjoyed Lexus V-8, you know what I'm talking about.

Front of SUV looks awesome (I have the cladding all the way around with the alloys. Don't buy one without cladding, it looks wimpy and cheap!)

Rear can use some attention though. The rear bumper looks kind of out of place.

The car is very nice if you get it fully loaded with leather, cladding, auto transmission, alloys and Delco stereo.

Can't stand the base model.

Jeep is a brand name, it is not a generic term for a 4x4. A Kia is not a Jeep, just as a Jeep is not a Kia.

In WWII even Ford made Jeeps, as well as Willys, so using the name to describe rugged off road vehicles isn't bad, and folks often do it.

Ford never ever made Jeeps. Jeep is a brand name. A Ford is a Ford and a Jeep is a Jeep. You wouldn't call a Land Rover a Jeep would you?

10th May 2015, 19:50

Ford is one of the original makers of Jeep.

11th May 2015, 10:26

The term "jeep" originally came from the us military light weight 4x4 program. The "jeeps" built during World War 2 had been built by Ford and Willys.

Don't forget about 'Willys'. Or Kaiser.
