1991 Mazda MX5 B Package 1.6L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Great economical fun to drive car

Faults:

Small trunk.

Interior has faded due to the convertible top being down a lot.

Original clutch only lasted 40,000 miles.

Car could use more power.

Cramped interior.

Small gas tank limits cruising range. If you're driving happily, you'll get about 24mpg. Car has a 10 gallon tank and some reserve, so 250 miles is about tops.

Oil filter is hard to get to.

General Comments:

Car just feels right when you drive it. The suspension isn't too soft nor too hard.

Feels like a go-kart. Puts endless smiles on my face.

Cheap maintenance 4 cylinder engine and the light weight of the car makes tires last a long time and it gets good gas mileage even when driven somewhat hard.

Driven all freeway under 75mph, car will get 31 mpg. That's a 300 mile cruising range.

All maintenance is easy to do yourself.

Hi Steve. Just wondering how hard you drive your car. I have only had mine 3 months, but I get 35 MPG around town and the same on country roads. Mine 1.6 liter.89.

1991 Mazda MX5 Miata A Package 1.6 Litre 16 Valve

Faults:

I bought this car used in October of 98 with 65,000 miles on it. 20,000 miles later and I haven't experienced any problems to speak of beyond normal wear and tear (brake pads and shocks).

General Comments:

I bought this car used for what it cost me to maintain my 87 Porsche 924S in 1987 & 88 ($6.5K). This car is driven very hard every day up and down the canyons from my house. Handles great, dirt cheap to run, maintain, and insure. Just wish it had a little more top end power. Can keep with most anything the germans can throw at you on the tight canyon roads, but as soon as the speeds pick up (in access of 75-80 mph) its handling becomes less mature. The car still makes me grin everyday, just at lower speeds. Considering picking up a new M2 this coming spring.

Does Mx5 handle better than your previous car, Porsche 924?

I am due to buy one of these cars, but I cannot decide which one.
