1999 Mazda MX5

Summary:

Super reliable, great service

Faults:

The soft top (with glass window) needed to be replaced after about 7 years kept outside in southern heat. I was able to buy a replacement top and install it myself for about $450 in parts and tools. I recommend the glass window with rear defrost; the window lasted longer than the soft top itself!

I put after market wheels on, and after 100,000 miles the wheel studs sheer when the tires are rotated, so I have to have a few wheel studs replaced each time. I will have the wheels changed to Mazda parts, since this is such a hassle, and would not buy aftermarket wheels on my next car.

The car is very noisy at high speeds, due to the soft top. You cannot talk on the phone while driving due to noise, and you must have the stereo very loud in order to hear the speakers in the door.

The headlight covers become abraded and get a sort of cataract look, which dulls the light coming from them. I have to have them polished about once a year to keep them bright.

General Comments:

The car has been very reliable and has never left me stranded. This is mostly due to Mazda service. Mazda certified techs always pinpoint the problem I describe, and fix it right the first time, without any hassles or gouging. I have standard service done every 30k miles, and I do recommended replacements (such as changing the water pump along with the timing belt instead of waiting for the water pump to go out). This proactive approach saves the hassle of breaking down. Mazda has the best service and techs of any car model I have owned, and I will buy a Mazda again because of this.

The car handles exceptionally, however the driver should be educated in how to handle rear wheel drive cars in slippery conditions. I also recommend aqua tread tires to improve handling in very wet conditions.

The cloth/vinyl seats, carpet, and plastic parts have held up very well after 10 years and constant use. I did break the the center console lid hinge, but it is still hanging on and still closes.

Acceleration is fantastic in this car. It is fun to drive.

1999 Mazda MX5 1.8

Summary:

Great city and track roadster

Faults:

Alternator went at 136000km. Had it replaced with a rebuild. $190.00.

Clutch slave went at 137500km. Replaced with an OEM part. $160.

General Comments:

The Miata caught my eye a little under a year ago, and I spent months searching for the perfect example. The 99s appealed to me because they had the advancements of the NBs, but a sub-$9000 price tag.

The car so far has been a dream to drive. Acceleration is somewhat sluggish unless you shift above 4000 revs in first and second (for the sake of my gas bill, I reserve this driving style for very special occasions).

If driven economically, my car returns about 24MPG in the city and close to 30 on the highway (though the car provides a scary highway experience, especially at night in the rain; so I mostly take city roads).

Overall, I can't say enough about the car. The few niggles I've experienced have paled in comparison to the many problems I had with my Jetta. The Miata is exactly what I expected it to be: an economical cruiser with everyday practicality (just don't expect to haul a new dresser drawer in the trunk!)

I am looking to purchase a 1999 - 2001 MX-5 in the next few months.

I test drove one not long ago. They are little beauties aren't they, and are so much fun to drive.

Can't wait to get mine, once the boss gives final approval.

How Ironic! I purchased a 1999 Miata with 38,000 miles. Great condition to boot, and Mica Green a nice upgrade of British racing green. Takes your breath away!

I truly LOVE this car. Great handling and not quite, but close, resemblance to the 60-70s Lotus Elan (that's a car!). The Japanese really know how to make reliable cars.

I am proud to own a Miata because the founder of the Miata was a roadster enthusiast and wanted that heritage to continue. Bloody Thanks I must say. Nothing beats the price and having one to just drive.

For the 50/50 weight ratio, this car HANGS in turns. I mean really sharp turns! What a bang for the bucks. Forget the other expensive roadsters. This is better and meant for the real driver of roadsters. With minor tweaking of the engine and body, along with suspension, it gets hot.

Oh did I forget to talk about my Jetta? Good I forgot. What a piece of junk! The money lost for what misery? You like me know what really is the difference from Jetta to Miata.

Keep Miaten and have the ride of your life.

1999 Mazda MX5 Miata LS 1.8

Summary:

Great looking car, fun to drive

Faults:

At 31,000 miles the rear end differential leaked oil. Initially I did not catch it - and by the time I did, I just let it go till it screamed 'replace me'. It was under warranty.

At 40,000 miles the AC began to leak. I never fixed it... turned the car in for a new Miata! I ate $2k on my old car and paid sticker on a new 2002 - but got the 0% interest. Great deal!

General Comments:

I live in Orlando, FL, so I drive this car year round with the top down - except when it rains.

I bought my classic red, tan top, 1999 Miata LS new in Oct 1999. I am 6'2", so the fit is a little tight, but I got used to it. But that is about as tall a driver that the car will accomodate.

No space for luggage. If you plan a trip for two, you both better pack light.

Aside from the space, this car is soooooo much fun. It handles so well and feels and sounds great. The power is OK... but, it leaves you wanting more. It is a true sports car, and a very reliable one at that.

I liked it so much, that I turned it in for a Miata LS 2002. Such a deal! OK... at 40,000 I needed tires, brakes, an AC leak fixed (warranty), and the interior was a little worn. Exterior was near perfect. But, I got a very good deal on a new 2002... sweet!
