1994 Mazda Protege DX 1.8

Summary:

Absolutely the best car I've owned in 25 years

Faults:

Just regular maintenance things; tires, brakes, exhaust etc.

General Comments:

This car has been a tank --- absolutely indestructible. I am unable to kill it. I've tried.

It was bought to replace an aged GLC, and I've never owned a car that has performed as well; 410000 miles and still going. (the GLC rusted out at about 180k).

1994 Mazda Protege DX 1.8 SOHC

Summary:

A huge mistake. Paid more to fix than for the car

Faults:

Intake went and coolant started draining into the engine. ($700 - $1200)

Automatic trans started grinding into each gear when the car was cold. Said it couldn't be fixed, just replaced. ($1800+)

Heater core just went, all coolant drained, car could have easily blown head gasket. ($600)

Window alignment wound not stay in place for anything.

Power locks were not powerful enough to lock the door.

1994 Mazda Protege DX

Summary:

This is a very good first car for people with a low budget

Faults:

Since my mom has purchased this car, she has had all the scheduled maintenance on the car and it's runs great to this day.

We just recently found out that the A/C could have been working for the years that we have been driving it without it because of some belt. I'm not sure of all the details, but when it first broke we took it to a mechanic and he told us it would be 1k+ to replace the whole thing when we only needed that one belt changed.

Never had anything serious go wrong with the car.

Only thing that kind of bothered me is that the horn one day started to go off on its own, so we unhooked it and took off the sensor pad underneath the centerpiece in the steering column and re-soldered it. It works perfect now.

General Comments:

This is my first car and I love it, This car has some punch to it, it's a kicker and fun to drive compared to the newer models and has a surprisingly good steering radius. (better than a Toyota Matrix).

The speaker wiring could use some TLC and a new paint job would be nice, but overall I love this car.

From what I have seen, I have the nicest 94 or around that year Protege. Others that I see have dents and broken lights, so I don't know how other people take car of this car.

And this car gets VERY good gas mileage (20+ mpg) for its age.

If you love this car, it will love you back!

Sorry for you misfortunes. My 1996 Protege never got less than 37 MPG - but I had a manual transmission (I also wrote the review "Bland Box of Chocolates"). I never had issues with the air or horn. The only cosmetic thing wrong with it was the fact that the paint on the wheels was chipping and peeling. But that's understandable - the human has peeling skin, does he not? My Protege was a sweetheart - its deathblow was a clutch that went out at 124,000 miles - and a price that at that time I couldn't justify. Looking back, I wish I had replaced it.

1994 Mazda Protege DX 1.8L SOHC

Summary:

Quick, reliable, and fun to drive

Faults:

When I bought the car in 2004 it needed a few things to get it up to inspection standards:

147,000km (time of purchase) :

- Exhaust (Front Pipe)

- Handbrake (a common problem with these cars)

- Rear Struts

- 2 Wheel bearings

- Replaced the air filter, plugs and wires myself.

150,000km:

- Combination switch in the steering wheel went bad, causing the headlights to basically come on and off at random, even while not in the car. After a few annoying dead battery run-ins, I pegged the problem and replaced it cheaply.

155,000km:

- Replaced both drive belts due to wear

- The other 2 wheel bearings were getting noisy, so I had those changed as well.

170,000km:

- Muffler.

Present issues:

- Rear exhaust pipe starting to go (normal, considering our salted roads)

- Some surface rust appearing (also to be expected)

General Comments:

First off, I have to say this car has never left me stranded or broken down. With exception of the headlight switch issue requiring a couple of boosts, this car has been unbelievably reliable, considering its years and mileage. I knew what problems the car had when I purchased her (cheaply, I might add, due to those problems) and since then it's been normal wear and oil changes.

I previously owned a '93 DX automatic and have to say this one has been a little more reliable, partially due to the indestructible gear-box. Though I still enjoyed my time with the '93, the 5 speed improves it dramatically, especially with regards to performance and reliability.

The engine and tranny in this thing are bulletproof. At 180,000km the engine has lost NO power, burns little to no oil between changes, and I'm still on the original clutch.

I certainly don't baby it either, which is what really impresses me about this car. As long as you're good to it and perform regular maintenance, it keeps up with hard driving well. Fuel economy is below that of the Civic and Corolla, but I still get a respectable 120-130 km out of 10L in mostly city driving.

In terms of performance, it's no race-car, but with a properly driven 5 speed, expect a 1/4 mile in the mid-16 range with a high 8 to 9 0-100km/h. This is still competitive with brand new cars of its class, which generally have more hp, but are heavier as well.

Less weight comes at a cost, as although it keeps up or surpasses new class rivals in straight line performance, it lacks their superior safety features. No ABS, no airbags and 13" tires don't inspire a lot of confidence with regards to safety. If you're not a great driver, or are accident prone, I'd probably recommend spending extra to get a car (or even the LX model) with better safety features.

If you are a good driver and love to beat around town with a manual, you can't lose with a first-gen protege (DX or LX). It's faster than it looks, very reliable, roomy enough for a 6'+ driver and cheap to operate. Respect this car with regular maintenance and care, and it will respect you.
