1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan with sports package 4.3 V-8

Summary:

A great high performance sedan with superb fit and finish

Faults:

Brake system warning light had a malfunction and the parts were replaced under warranty. The brakes never failed, just the sensors needed replacing one time. This was minor and happened at 4800 miles.

At 62,000 (just past the standard warranty), the Air Mass Sensor went defective. This was just a warning light and did not leave me stranded. This was a minor problem, but the bill was $500 (275 in parts, 200 for labor).

The general quality of the car is excellent. The structure of the car is solid. The interior is flawless and has worn very well after close to 3 years.

General Comments:

In general the car has been mechanically excellent. I have never been left stranded or with painful mechanical difficulties like broken power windows.

The ride of the car is very smooth and the handling is precise and quick for a mid-size sedan. The engine is very smooth and provides good power all the way through the rev band.

It has the most interior room for a mid size sedan for both front and rear passengers.

Air mass sensor on my E320 went out at about the same mileage, but the bill was considerably less at $334 (June '02). Did not take it back to the Mercedes.

1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300 turbo diesel

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I purchased my first MB in 1960, 190db, '67 - 200d, '75 - 300d, '87 - 300 turbo diesel, '98 - turbo diesel. In the 39 years, I have nothing but the best experience with them all. I have kept a spreadsheet on every penny spent on them ie: fuel, repairs, mpg, etc on each vehicle. The '98 is the crowning glory of my 40 years of driving in this Chariot of a automobile.

I have driven preowned Mercedes since 1977 and have owned about 15 or more of them. I have never been disappointed.

In 1999 I purchased a new E300 Turbodiesel. I've been on cloud nine ever since. It is, to my mind, a perfect automobile. It's fast, economical (40 - 45 mpg), and it never breaks!!! It's roomy, sticks to the highway, and has a cruising range of well over 700 miles (1100 Km)... and that's a whole days' driving!!!
