They need to make these in Germany - the Alabama plant must have lots of problems.

The local dealer service manager has told me there are lots of quality issues with this vehicle.

The transmission sound neat, but is very temperamental.

Rear seating is limited.

My gas mileage dropped 20% from the 98 model.

Hey, don't lump the rest of the Mercedes range because of your M-class problem. That M-Class single-handedly dragged down the reliability average of Mercedes cars, and had the worst reliability after its first year of cars in the Consumer Reports test, even worse than Chryslers. You want to spend $40K on a Merc there are far better ways to go.

I Had a 1999 Mercedes ML 320 and I have to tell you it was the biggest pile of junk. I bought it used at 54,000 and got rid of it at 72,000 and this is what was replaced. Fuel pump, light switch, window switch, turn signal, shocks and struts, torsion bars, and a sensor that regulates fuel mixture. I decided to go with a 01 with a factory warranty, see how it goes.

2001 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML 430 4.3L V8

Summary:

A nice little present for your high school daughter

Faults:

So far so good. Perhaps the previous owner (a laid off stock broker - poor fellow) worked the bugs worked out of it. Everything is working fine and feels solid. Having read mixed reviews about the M-Class Benz, I know I am taking a chance.

General Comments:

It is tight and itches to fly down twisting rough roads. Its also a head turner - people are curious to know who is driving an ML 430. (ML 320's don't get this response.) I like the three built-in garage door openers: one for my home, one for my private garage at work and one for my Gulfstream's hanger. The quality of the 2001 is better than that reported in the 1998 - 2000's. Interior materials seem good. There is room for improvement in the feature and ergonomic departments. A lower back massage would be nice. But overall, this Benz does what a Benz does best: It brags and lives up to its brag.

I love how you just "casually" throw in the fact that you love the three-garage-door openers, 1) for the house, 2) for the office, and (of course!) 3) for my hangar and the Gulfstream that's sitting inside it.

Your last vehicle is a Mitsubishi. Montero and you roll in a Gulfstream?? Why the need to advertise buddy...
