1995 Mercury Cougar xr7 4.6

Summary:

The most balanced all-around American car since the'72 Skylark(GSX)

Faults:

Tie rods have bent, ball joints have broken (1 broke/ replaced both), fuel sending unit/ fuel line/ pump-system needed replacing as well as the fuel tank.

General Comments:

The towing ability that this car has is amazing. From 40mph to 80 mph, this car screams. It's a perfectly balanced car and reacts truly when pointed. It still has the look of the cat that was soon lost on the down-sized models. I'm looking for another with the V-8 with fewer miles. I noticed the average price on this 11 year old car goes up each year. Cult car, I guess.

1995 Mercury Cougar LX V8

Summary:

Very reliable car for me over the years with minimal maintenance

Faults:

The vehicle is a two door model. The driver side door is extremely heavy and has started sagging slightly to the point that the top portion of the door is rubbing against the top window frame. The friction has caused the top window frame piece to loosen and to start coming off. When the door is opened, there is a "click" because that particular piece sticks out.

General Comments:

I turned around in a parking lot to take a closer look at a parked car, just exactly like mine as same make and model, color etc. I noticed the exact same problem on their driver side door and window as well. This leads me to believe that this may be a common problem for this make and year? Is it the Post that needs to be reinforced or can something basically be tightned. I need to address this problem before I fix the window frame.

The problem on your car can be fixed for $30, it is the pins in the hinges that wear out.

It's not very difficult to do the work yourself, either. Even with limited automotive knowledge - if you can use a ratchet, you can do it.

I have owned the 1995 XR7 4.6 V for three years now, and even with the damage on the passenger front fender (my fault, stuck my nose out to far), I still love this car.

I now have 86,000 miles on it, and keep the oil changed and replaced the coil packs (20.00 @ rockauto.com) and the plug wires, which were factory originals, and this car still drives and rides, and even with the damage, it still looks good.

When I got the cat, it had 57,000 miles on it, and was a one owner, and is light green with a dark green padded roof on the rear quarter of the top.

I drive this car daily, even in the winter, because our Chevy usually won't start in cold weather.

This car has been the most dependable car I have ever owned, and I have found a 1994 XR7 with the 4.6 and will purchase it; it has 97,000 miles on it, and it is a beautiful gold with a sunroof and a new transmission. I hope it is a good car like the one I have.

If you take care of these cars, they will treat you right. If not, they won't, like most cars.

Thanks from Missouri.

I love my 95 Cougar. This is the second one I have had, the first I wrecked doing 140 mph and walked away so, and this second I just bought. It's a bit beat up, but looking at the car, ya can't tell, because it still looks nice. A few dollars, and I know it will be great, and yes my doors sag as well.

1995 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Bostonian Edition 3.8Liter V6

Summary:

This is the best car I have ever owned

Faults:

About six months after I purchased the car, I could not start it on the first cold morning. It turned out that the previous owner never performed any standard maintenance besides oil changes. After replacing the spark plugs and ignition wires, everything was fine for the next three years.

The original battery was nine years old before I replaced it. I don't know that it really needed to be replaced, but I didn't want to take the chance that winter.

General Comments:

This car doesn't have the kind of power that most people talk about, but that's probably because I have the V6 engine instead of the V8.

I love the way the car handles corners. I'm amazed at how comfortable the car is. I'm slightly shocked that all the power equipment (windows, locks, seats, antenna, etc) still works just as well as the day I bought it. I love the look of the car, and I think Ford made a mistake when they redesigned and then discontinued it.

I like this car so much, I plan to replace the engine when the time comes rather than buy another car.

I have a 1994 Bostonian with a V8. and I love it. I've kept her well maintained and still get a "nice ride" now and then from people which isn't bad for an 11 year old car.
