1999 Mercury Cougar 2.0

Summary:

Been getting me from point A-Z, and so far so good!

Faults:

I've noticed that I have a power surge problem.(95,000Km)

The car has some serious problems when I go through deeper puddles.

All I've had to replace on it was a blower motor (100,000km) that cost a total of $35, and some headlights, a total of $30.

I had to replace all four tires (113,000).

I'm still glad that I bought this car. I just hope for no problems, and cross my fingers that it doesn't eat anymore tires.

General Comments:

I've had this car for a year now. I'm very happy with my 99 Cougar 4cyl 2.0.

I just wanted to say that my Cougar is a very reliable little machine. I had it parked in my back yard for about a week this winter. The temperature was at -30 to -45C, and when I went to start it, it fired right up.

I put about 500km on it in a week.

1999 Mercury Cougar

Summary:

I love the way they made the car, but it is very expensive to fix, but what car isn't

Faults:

I read all about these Mercury Cougars. I also own a 1999 Cougar and my check engine comes on and off.

As for my alarm, I have aftermarket alarm for my car, so I don't know about the alarm going off and on.

Also I too also was told that the reason why my engine light goes on is supposedly cause the converter need to be replaced - that's B.S., I replaced it and it still goes off and on.

Do not floor your Cougar, these cars are not meant to be for that.

I also learn my lesson when the light came on my Cougar.

Just found out that one of the rims was not the correct one for my car. I need help. What is the right size of rims for the Cougar, and also I had a problem with the tire sizes, please let me know.

My power locks, doors and windows went out on me, so to all, I know this car is very pricey to fix, and to those who say they have had no problems with this beautiful messed up car, I recommend that you give it some time.

If you have an answer for my question, please email at c.melissa75@yahoo.com. Thank you.

For your tire/rim problems you may want to go to a tire dealer and simply ask for an estimate. That will spell out the rim size and tire size. You could also go to a junk yard and see if you could get matching replacement for the off sized rim.

Go to a car parts store and have them scan the computer of error codes. Some stores do that for free. Now you have something to go by. You can narrow down the cause for the CEL after that. Sometimes it is the tank lid, or the MAF sensor, or the ignition system (plugs, wires, coil pack). you can replace parts going from cheap to expensive. Of course that mechanic of yours went the other way and started with the catalytic converter. I can't say if it was bad or not, but it is not the part I would have started with.

I also recommend you use some Lucas Oil Fuel treatment to get rid of carbon deposits.

Good luck and search the Cougar/ Contour sites for ideas.

1999 Mercury Cougar

Summary:

Junk

Faults:

Wouldn't start in the winter, so I had to put in a block heater.

Air conditioning pump went out and the car completely stopped running.

The levers on the front seats that move the seat forward, so you have access to the back seat, broke right away very easily.

The belts snapped at 130,000 miles.

Replaced the timing belt at 130,000 miles.

The vents in the dashboard are coming off.

The headlights are foggy and you can barely see in the dark.

General Comments:

The car steers very nicely.

I would never recommend a Cougar to anyone.

The car costs more to fix then it is worth.

It is very nice on gas.

It is too cheaply made.

I like the storage room.

When one thing goes bad, all of the car parts soon start to fail.

I like the look of the car, but that and gas mileage are the only good qualities.
