1999 Mercury Cougar V6

Summary:

Emissions Problems Anyone?

Faults:

While still under warranty within a year of purchasing brand new, had to have alternator replaced.

Check engine light has been on since 6 months after purchasing. Kept returning to dealer, but they could never find the problem. They finally said the computer was bad, but they did not fix it.

Many sensors have been replaced.

Trunk latch problems.

Moon roof will no longer open--stopped working years ago.

Had to have fan motor replaced as heater/ac fan would only work on 4.

Tires need replacing frequently and are expensive.

Cover over defroster flies off when I turn the defroster on high.

General Comments:

My main concern right now is that my car will not pass emissions. I cannot get my tags renewed until I pass the emissions test and I have spent a lot of money so far getting sensors, plugs, etc etc etc replaced and the EGR replaced and cleaned. The check engine light is STILL on. Has anyone had this problem or can you give me some pointers as to what I can do? I am very frustrated and tired of dealing with this.

While I love my car, I too have also had to replace my ERG valve, multiple sensors, my check engine light and my coolant light have been on for longer than I can remember and no one can seem to fix them, my moon roof has ceased to work as well only it's stuck cracked open, my rear defrost shorted out and shattered my entire back glass, and I've had to replace the alternator twice. Mine is currently in the shop awaiting repair on yet another sensor that causes my entire car to shake whenever it's idling. Finding a mechanic who will willingly work on this car is quite an endeavor within itself. I feel your desperation.

Summary:

A very bad choice

Faults:

On the first day of owning my car the exterior and interior lighting system shut down completely while driving home in the dark. Took it to dealer next morning had it returned to me that afternoon, dealer says it was wiring in the headlamp knob. The same exact thing happened that evening on my home. Had vehicle returned two days later fixed. My vehicle had a new sunroof installed due to wear after 6 months of ownership plus a new clutch and an engine rebuild. after 2 years of ownership my service repairs added up to $16542.35 which I had one thing going for me which was my warranty. After paying $26300.00 for my top of the line 1999 Black mercury cougar v6 with a factory added on body kit I believe it was a total nightmare.

General Comments:

Would not recommend vehicle to my worst enemy.

The dealer is probably your worst enemy. Recommend it to him.

1999 Mercury Cougar

Summary:

I hate it

Faults:

Steering wheel locks up and engine light comes on when you go through a puddle more than 1" deep.

Interior and exterior lights dim while driving.

Replaced front wheel bearings three times in 6 months.

Passenger side mirror is falling off for no reason.

Sometimes the car won't start, then I shut off my radio and wait about 10 seconds and it will start.

I need at least 2 tires every year at $150 each.

It makes this horribly loud humming sound only when it's cold.

Sometimes the radio just shuts off.

Console where radio is gets hot to touch and gives off heat.

Cup holder is crap.

Trunk shuts before I even get to it.

Driver window makes a squealing noise.

The car vibrates and pulls not matter how many times I get it aligned or fixed.

The seat belts are constantly getting stuck (and I have 2 nieces in car seats that like to go with me)

Dash board tray popped off.

General Comments:

I love to look at this car, but HATE to drive it. I treat this car like a child. I have put well over $3000 in repairs. I am a college studen and cannot afford this. That is why I bought a new car!!

If anyone else has that humming problem please let me know because I have been to 3 mechanics and they can't figure out what it is or how to fix it. nmc18_99@yahoo.com
