1997 Mercury Mountaineer V6

Summary:

Sporty-Great SUV

Faults:

Starter and Wolf speaker, also has a gas-egg smell sometimes. I was told it is not the converter, but one of the sensors.

General Comments:

Great vehicle, very dependable, I upgraded from an Explorer. I got leather, sun roof, it's loaded. I love it. I would like the third seat, but other than that I really have no complaints. I do have one complaint and that is the air noise around the windows. But I also had that problem with my Explorer.

I have the same egg/gas smell in my 97 Mountaineer. I just recently noticed it. I never thought much about it until I read your review. Do you know what it is? Do you think I should get it checked out?

Also, did your power antenna break too? It's a common problem that the antenna gets stuck in the up position. I would like to replace the whole thing with a solid non powered mast antenna, however haven't found the parts to do this yet.

1997 Mercury Mountaineer V8

Summary:

Highly recommended, you won't regret it

Faults:

Lower ball joint replacement at around 60,000.

Some alignment problems and a ticking engine noise, which I've been told is a lifter sticking.

AC doesn't seem as cool, possibly the condenser from reading other reports..

Transmission filter needed flushed as I got a noticeable vibration in shifting around 40 mph.

General Comments:

I was skeptical about buying a used vehicle, but the Mountaineer has proved to be very reliable so far. I never get tired of it and it is comfortable for traveling and has plenty of power. Great JBL sound system.

1997 Mercury Mountaineer 302 V-8

Summary:

Still performing very well

Faults:

Miscellaneous dash bulbs.

Air conditioner condenser (warranty).

Catalytic converter (warranty).

Front drive shaft.

Clock runs fast.

Alternator at 65000 miles.

General Comments:

Impressed with the V-8 engine and the all wheel drive set up. 65% power from the rear wheels and 35% from the front wheels all the time. The computer shifts to the four wheel drive when slipping.

Optional JBL audio system with the six CD changer provides crisp, clear, excellent sound.

Excellent in the snow with the very good traction Firestone AT tires. Don't believe what they say; rotate, balance and keep the proper air pressure in them and you are good to go.
